Customer Questions & Answers

can these tiles be installed over an existing laminate floor or do we need to get down to subfloor

Asked by: Dana
If your laminate floor is another floating system: no. If you are going over an existing vinyl floor, it must meet joist, deflection and tolerance (flatness) specs. If you have humps or bumps that exceed the tolerance spec, you will need to flatten those out before installation.

Can I install this over an existing porcelain tile floor that's level and in good shape? If so, would it literally just be sitting on top of the old tile floor?
Asked by: BusyMom
You should be able to do that as long as it's smooth. I'd worry a bit about the grout lines in the old flooring but there is forgiveness there.

Pads or moisture barrier for SnapStone

I plan on installing Snapstone 6" x 24" floating tile floor in a bath with shower and toilet only (25 sq ft). Do I need to install a moisture barrier or pad under this floor like you would on a floating hardwood floor.
Asked by: Bob
The back of the SnapStone tray has an overmold that functions as an underlayment so no additional underlayment is required or recommended. If you wish to apply a moisture barrier, we suggest a roll-on product, such as RedGard by Custom Building Products. Also, ensure that your sub floor meets the following specifications: • 5/8” sub floor over 16” OC joists • The floor must not have deflection greater than 1/360 of the span when measured under a 300 lb concentrated load (See ASTM C 627). • For tile with all edges shorter than 15", maximum allowable variation is 1/4" in 10' from the required plane, with no more than 1/16" variation in 12" when measured from the high points in the surface. For tiles with at least one edge 15" in length, maximum allowable variation is 1/8" in 10' from the required plane, with no more than 1/16" variation in 24" when measured from the high points in the surface, as indicated by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook. We recommend laying a straight edge on the sub floor, working your way across the room, to identify any areas that do not meet this spec. High spots should be sanded down and low spots filled with a cement patching compound. Please visit our website for installation instructions, video clips of the installation process and FAQ's. Also, call us toll free at 877-263-5861 with any questions. Thank you.

Cutting is a little harder unless you have a diamond blade. Grout needs to be almost completely cleaned up during installation else it is almost impossible to remove once dry

Grout and tile are expensive but only product we could find that would work in a basement without fear of warping, potential water damage, etc. If the price was reduced some we would consider for other rooms in house. This is our ongoing basement project so we are ordering tile and grout as funds permit. Enjoy the photos. I gave it 4 stars since we consider the price high and obviously want to see how it last and performs. Other wise we hope Home Depot continues to carry this product. Wish it was an in-store product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Grey! I ordered these online and had them shipped to my house. These tiles look NOTHING like described or shown in pictures. They are more taupe than grey. I returned them to my local store though with no problem.

The only problem I had is I feel like the product is a bit fragile. With traditional tile, you would mortar to the base board but in this case, you are floating. I dropped my measuring tape twice from standing height and cracked two tiles, thus having to unsnap the tiles to get back at them. I worry about what happens when I'm done and drop something after everything is grouted. There will be no way to cut that piece out and secure it to other tiles. It will be only secured by grout. You won't be able to access the tabs. Seems like a heavy price to pay for tile that really only saves you in labor. Pricing it out, traditional methods are still cheaper by about $1.50-$2.00 a foot, but this installation is WAY quicker. I just hope I don't regret this down the road. I'd recommend it but with this reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great but never in store I loved this tile. When I remodeled the kitchen, we needed to add more tiles. While Home Depot had it online, it was not in store. This is a great product and should be in store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tiles not very durable We were initially impressed with this tile when we installed it in our kitchen. However, despite the fact that my husband was careful to keep the subfloor deviations within the specified margin of error, we have had constant problems with cracked tiles. We do have a creaky old home, but we were under the impression that the flexibility of the floating floor made it ideal for that. We think the tile is just not the best quality. We dropped a glass vase on the floor and it shattered a large spot on the tile where it made contact. Didn't even crack the glass. So we definitely won't be buying this again or recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looking good after four years I installed this in my kitchen about four years ago. It was a DIY project. We were diligent about getting the wood floor underneath as level and planar as possible and that took the bulk of the effort. The snapstone itself was easy to put together and grout. Four years on still looks great.
