I'm thinking about getting this to clear snow from the walkways at my apartment building. I manage the complex and have a downstairs apartment. Hopefully this isn't too heavy for me to carry up and down the stairs by myself all winter!

Minimum Extenstion Cord Gauge

I see the specs on this Snow Joe Electric snow thrower call for a 12-3 gauge extension cord. You advertise a 16 gauge extension cord as a recommended add-on purchase. Don't you think you should change that to 12 gauge? And I'd highly recommend a cold-weather extension cord---- much easier to handle when clearing snow and it will not crack in below-freezing weather like regular outdoor extension cords. It's an additional expense buyers should know before purchasing. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-100-ft-12-3-50-Cold-Weather-Extension-Cord-748-123100HC4/205649548

Answer:
10 gauge at 100 foot would be safer for starting load. 12 gauge is a lot easier to handle but will not be good for heavy loadig of the machine. I may have cfaused my machine to fail with a 12 gauge cord.

It's small and light, which kind of cuts both ways -- it's easy to maneuver but doesn't always get down to the pavement. When it came it was missing a small screw needed to attach the upper chute crank, and I had to find a spare screw to attach it. It's best to have a 100 foot extension cord. Why doesn't it come with a retractable cord? That would be a great modification. Otherwise, it starts easily and works well.

Had it put together in about 20 mins and my 14 yr old daughter and I had the driveway and sidewalk cleaned off in no time. The headlight is terrific, gets dark early now. Lightweight, easy to assemble (just a few simple screws to tighten) and ready to use in minutes. My back can't handle shoveling and I couldn't afford a full size gas snow blower. This cleared my driveway in a matter of about 20 minutes. We don't have a huge driveway, but when the snow plows go by, the snow piles up at the entrance. I was able to get rid of that (about 6 inches of packed, semi-heavy snow) as well as the rest of the 3 inches of powdered snow with ease. Some might find the need of the extension cord a pain, but for me it was worth it to save my back. Very happy with the product and highly recommend it.

The blower part and the handles were fine, but the wheels are tiny plastic like Tinker Toys and only about 1 1/2" off the ground. The axle is spindly and looks like it would break. I wasted more energy PUSHING it to get it to go anywhere! If you have one inch of snow on a paved surface you might be ok, but no more. And then you may as well take a broom and sweep the snow away. I tried to use it but it was hopelessly bogged down. I returned it - Home Depot refunded me immediately.

Got a floor model from Home Depot a couple years ago and this thing has made winters much better than shoveling. I usually take this thing out when the snow has acummulated to 3 inches or so, and it is about as much effot as vaccuming (not much. I occasionally have to move 6 inches of packed snow and it gets through it, but then engine nearly chokes. It is great for what it is meant for, I guess. Love the light and the steel augur. And the quality build.

First time I ever used one and was surprised at how well it worked. Had 16 inches over night on Christmas, This machine handled it without getting bogged down. My driveway is also gravel and that wasn't a problem either. Snow Joe made shoveling fun.
