Not sure if you are asking about this gardenia or the Jasmine, NJ will be too cold for the Jubilation Gardenia(grows in USDA zone 7-10) and Confederate Jasmine (grows in USDA zone 7-10)

Answer:
Take one of the leaves and fold if it has any moisture the leaf will open if it crumbles the leaf is dead. Slowly go down the main tem to the root squeeze it. If it crumbles pull up the plant, if the roots are stuff and can brake easy then you can say it's dead. If the main stem has moisture then clip off the dead leaves and look up how to grow a healthy gardenias online

Answer:
I am not sure if your plant is dead or not. If you are going to bring your gardenia in for the winter you need to make sure your plant still receives enough water and sunlight in a window

It says hardiness zone 8,7,9,10; but I noticed that you said NJ will be too cold for Gardenia. I live in Long Island (zone 7b); so I am a little confused, the description says zone 7 is good..
It would be planted in the garden soil, not in a pot.

Answer:
Large parts of the state of NJ are in zone 5 and 6, also other parts of NJ are in zone 7 , and in the previous question you are referring to the customer did not specify which part of NJ they lived in. If you live in an area of NY that is zone 7 you will be good planting this plant.
