Out of the box, the annoying surprise was the mower deck height; no one cuts the grass to 1â then why ship the mower with 1â deck height. It does not take too long to set it back to your desired height (recommended is 3â or higher). Once 15 minutes assembly was done, it started easy and got to work right away. Mulching attachment comes pre-installed which can be swapped by side-discharge attachment. It did a great job in mulching the grass clippings that I never noticed any large grass clippings laying around. Engine is quiet. Its 7â wheels gave me no trouble through tall grass areas. Since itâs a walk behind push mower, itâs suitable for small to mid-size yards. If you prime it more than 3 times, it might give you trouble starting the engine. How long would it last does depend on how well you maintain it. Read the manual, follow the instructions and you will enjoy operating this mower. All in all, itâs a good machine and does well what itâs supposed to do.

Upon receiving the Southland 21 Inch Push mower, I was skeptical of the overall quality, and specifically the Magna Force OHV 5 ft-lb engine. The mower arrived fully assembled except for attaching several lock nuts, and filling the crankcase with oil (included). The wheels also needed to be changed to the proper height. After using the mower in various conditions, I must say Iâm quite impressed with this little mower.
The mower started on the second pull and the engine runs smooth as silk. It is noticeably quieter than my John Deere self-propelled mower and has less vibration. In fact itâs so quite I had to check the engine speed with a tachometer to ensure itâs running at maximum power.
The mower zipped through 6 inch dry grass without bogging, both in mulching and side discharge modes. I tested the mowerâs power by mulching some wet leaves, and it performed remarkably. The cyclonic force deck is a superb design and does not clog or leave clumps of grass when mulching. The mower only weighs 60 lbs and requires little effort to push. Itâs great for use in tight spaces and boarders around gardens.
The small wheels (7â diameter) are somewhat flimsy and require removal when changing the cutting height, but thatâs a task I seldom perform once the proper height is selected. For the price, this is a good choice for small to medium sized lawns. It exceeded all my expectation and I recommend this product for value conscious consumers wanting a quality mower. Itâs also made in the USA.

It's hard to find a mower that is reasonably priced with a quiet & powerful engine like this one. It's just as good, or maybe even better, than other high-priced, popular brands. We're very happy with it.

This is a very basic no-frills mower. In my mind, three stars is a good review for this type.
To begin, this was received in a box with all the necessary parts including the oil which was not already installed. Don't forget to do this very important step. However...do not do that step before assembling the rest of the mower because you will have to tilt it a lot to finish the assembly. The actual assembly was fairly easy depending on your mechanical skill level. You will need two small wrenches and possible a screwdriver. I recommend adjusting the deck height first to a level of one step below the maximum height (4 levels are available). This requires unscrewing the wheel bolt nuts, repositioning the bolts in another hole, and then replacing the nuts. About 10 minutes. Then insert the bolts for the handle and attach it. However.... while doing this you should position the control cable ABOVE the crossbar first. Mine came with the cable below the crossbar and this position will make for a very short cable life, because it will bend the cable sharply every time you fold the handle and unfold it for the next use. My experience with a similar mower resulted in a cable rusting, freezing up, and eventually breaking because of this problem.
I mistakenly pushed the prime button many times because I felt no back pressure. After that, it took many, many pulls of the starter cord to start the engine. My error. Press the button only 2 or 3 times and then pull the starter cord, Mine works best at two times and starts on the first pull every time that way.
I noticed that the effort to push this mower is a lot more when the engine is running. I assume that is because of the high pitch of the mulching style blade causing a downward pull. My old mower was much easier to push but did have much less pitch of the blade tips. If you have a problem with this mower taking too much effort to push, you might try a different blade. Check with your local mower shop about that.
While on the subject of the blade, mine came very dull, presumably to avoid complaints about injury during the assembly. You may want to have the blade sharpened before the first regular use.
This mower compares favorably with my previous similar mower, another economy brand with a B&S engine, at a lower price for this one even though it is years later.
