Customer Questions & Answers

Does the metal cladding make the third ""ground " wire unnessasary?

Asked by: Spanishstroll
No the metal cladding does not make the third ground unnecessary. You still need to ground the green wire at both ends of the circuit

can this be used for outdoor ligtning such as flood lights on side of house?

Asked by: Denshirl
MC cable can be used outside where it will not get wet. Also keep in mind that though the MC cable can be used outside it can not terminate outside.

why are the set screw type connectors not recommended for aluminum armored MC cable?

why are the set screw type connectors not recommended for aluminum armored MC cable?
Asked by: garagebuilder
Unfortunately due to the potential for the screw to be over tightened and damage the armor, and potentially the conductors under the armor we do not recommend set-screws for this type of MC Cable. There are mechanical screw type MC Cable connectors available that utilize a saddle in between the screw and the cable armor such that only the saddle contacts the armor. These type connectors are acceptable for use with Type MC Cable. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

So I first became aware of this cable back when i had a sub-panel installed in my garage to run all of the tools in my woodshop. Everything was going to be surface mounted and I did not want to deal with conduit, all the different fittings I would need, and snaking THHN cable through conduit. So an electrician who just so happen to be in the same isle gathering what he needed showed me to this stuff as he overheard me talking to one of the Home depot associates. So far this stuff has been great. I use the 3/8 clamps and those metal screw type drywall anchors to secure it to the wall. I have used it to run (4) 20amp 120v circuits and (2) 20amp 240v circuits. Now to me it does not look as good as conduit would have with the wires running through it, but this stuff is faster and if you plan your runs and run it neatly it looks good. I used my nippers to carefully cut away the metal cladding around the wire, but this leaves jagged and unsafe edges. So as other reviewers stated. I would recommend pickup up one of the armored cable cutters.
