is this wire large enough to serve a building (50 amps) 150 ft away from main breaker?

Asked by: oldman
I don't believe so. Southwire has a voltage drop calculator on their website. I purchased this wire based on that calculator. It will work for 240v, 30A at around 225'.

Is this wire large enough to run a camper 30 amps 200 feet from main breaker??

Asked by: Clint
No, this wire is to small to support for this application. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Is this wire enough for a light recp. 750 ft away from home

Is this wire enough for a light recp. 750 ft away from home
Asked by: Jake
It depends upon the power required by the light. Voltage drop is the big issue with long circuits and you can use the Southwire voltage drop calculator (http://www.southwire.com/support/voltage-drop-calculator.htm) to see if a 6 AWG conductor will work. Assuming the following: single phase, copper conductor, direct buried, 6 AWG, 120V, and 3% voltage drop, I found that a current draw of 5 Amps will keep the voltage drop below 3% (industry recommendation) for a 750' circuit. So, as long as the current draw of the light is less than 5 Amps, you should be in good shape.

It took some research with the damaged samples to find the correct specs for this wire. After receiving my order, I realized that it was the original wire and brand that was in the initial installation 8 years ago. I was glad it was a perfect match since I am the one that necessitated the repair.
