How much dose a spool way

Asked by: HollyWood
A 50o FT spool of 8 stranded THHN weighs 31-31.5 LBS The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

what size wire is ok to run for a 100 amp panel

Must this be placed in a conduit or cable tray to meet most residential codes?

I have a basement in my home that I am turning into a woodworking shop (non-commercial) and most of my machinery runs on 220V. I mistakenly ran 12/3 from 30A and 50A breakers and I need to replace that wiring with 8/3 wiring. On a per foot basis, the 1000 ft. roll is much more economical than the 125 ft. Romex. I did notice the 1000 ft. roll does not have the same outer insulator as the Romex. Do you sell Romex 8/3 in 1000 ft. rolls?
Asked by: tedlynet
Hi Tedleynet, In short, yes you must place this THHN cable in conduit for it to work safely and to pass code/inspection. As for the actual wire to use, this 8 gauge wire is rated for 40 amps. That said, you'd need to run the specific wire to safely power your 30 amp and 50 amp cable. Failure to do so will lead to it not working at all, or creating a fire hazard due to the size being too large for the device. Any electrician will recommend you to use a 30 amp rated wire for machinery, which is #10 AWG copper wire. For your 50 amp machinery, you will need to use 50 amp service, which is #6 AWG copper wire. In terms of length, you'll need to measure out how much wire you will need. We do carry #6 AWG per linear foot and 125' rolls at your local store, and #10 AWG wire in a NM Romex jacket (with 3 or 4 conductors) in 15', 25', 50', 100', or 250' lengths. I'd only be concerned with purchasing any 1000' rolls if you are using that much, or you are doing this for additional projects. Only use #8 THHN copper if you plan on using it for 40 amp service, or you are using a 30 amp service for a long run (over 100'). It will NOT work at all, at any length, for 50 amp service. Come down to your local store for local pricing and availability, and I'd strongly suggest consulting an electrician for any further wiring/electrical code questions you have. Joseph

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Timely Receipt; Reel Damaged Received this order on time, slightly ahead of schedule in fact. Box was intact with no evidence of dropping. However, the platic reel was damaged. There will be no problem unspooling the wire; but my option to reuse the spool may be limited.
