Customer Questions & Answers

60 amps at 150' what size copper wire

Asked by: dave
Wayne P. @ Lighthouse Energy Company post reply The wire type and size matters to the installed item to be powered, and the space the wire will be installed in. if a house and the wire will stay inside the walls and attic, then #4 NM-B, as NM-B is only rated to 55amps. NEC 2008 310 you can run #6 but only installed in a pipe, and the wire used would be THHN. If in a business you would need metal pipe, and the same wire. More info is needed to answer your question better. what is the power for? what is the path you plan to take? indoor or outdoor?

Would this be suitable for a welder requiring 240 volts and has an amperage rating of 20 amps? It will be about a 30 ft.

Wayne P. of Lighthouse Energy Company in West Palm Beach Florida reply to post. This seems like a very small welder, but ok LOL The Wire size should be #10 THWN, NM-B is fine for this install. we pick #10 a size for 30Amps. due to the fact you are using it to install a welder. but breaker it at 20Amps REF: NEC 2008 310.15
