Questions & Answers

What is the right wire for the 30 amp receptacle used in campgrounds for rvs?

Asked by: Barbwire
10/3 UF-B Cable is rated for 30 Amps and can be used for the wiring between the panel (breaker) and the receptacle. For connection between the receptacle and the RV, I suspect that a flexible cord product like a SOOW (600V) or SJOOW (300V) would be used. For these products, per the NEC you would need an 8/4 rather than a 10/3 (the equipment grounding conductor is counted when specifying flexible cords). The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Would you use this to wire a dryer and /or a hot water heater

Asked by: Beck619
UF-B cable can be used for both of these applications. 10/3 can be used for an Electric Dryer up to 30 Amps. 10/2 conductor is recommended for a hot water heater.
