Answer:
I would use a heavier gauge if you plan to use a compressor with other things. I used 10/3 for my trailer workshop. Its better to have thicker wire so that can run multiple things without triggering the breaker. I ran a 10/3 underground to a small breaker panel and used 12/2 inside for the outlets... I also installed 220v outlets.

12-2 UF-B cable is rated for 20 Amps and can be connected to a breaker rated 20 Amps or less. If your load (compressor and lights combined) is less than 20 Amps, this will work. If your circuit length is more than 50', use the voltage drop calculator at http://www.southwire.com/support/voltage-drop-calculator.htm to find out if you need to upsize the conductors to reduce the voltage drop. Works fine.... Bury it deep in a high traffic area or use PVC conduit if you can't. It's all about safety.

Answer:
Southwire 12-2 Gray Solid UF-B W/G Cable does not require conduit for underground use; UNLESS local electrical codes requires it. So you still have to check your local code requirements.

This product is rated for 20 Amps. Assuming you have 15 Amp receptacles and are wiring this from a 15 Amp breaker, this product will work - however voltage drop may be an issue if you are drawing 15 Amps on a 100' run. You will be less likely to have an under-voltage problem (which can damage motors in appliances) if you upsize to 10-2 UF-B. You can check the voltage drop using the voltage drop Read More
