Answer:
A big part of this is how much current are you going to draw? The voltage drop will increase with the current. If you use LED lighting in the posts, the current will be minimal and you probably won't even notice. Just make sure you run the correct size wire for the circuit: #14 for 15 amps, #12 for 20 amps.
If you have a whole bunch of 100W halogen or mercury bulbs, your current will be much higher

If you have a whole bunch of 100W halogen or mercury bulbs, your current will be much higher and
you may want to go 1 or 2 wire sizes larger to minimize the drop.

Answer:
You are correct – for an installation of that length, voltage drop is a major concern and you will need to upsize your conductors (depending upon the current needed). You can use the voltage drop calculator on the Southwire website:

To compute the voltage drop, you will need to know the current needed by the load (lights) and the voltage. Do Read More

Answer:
No, 400 feet is a very long run; therefore, it would require a much larger wire. 1 conductors per phase utilizing a #500 Copper conductor will limit the voltage drop to 2.76% or less when supplying 100.0 amps for 400 feet on a 120 volt system. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). In the descriptor for the 10-3 south wire 250 foot, (same cable just 1/2 the length) it mentions that it is UL approved and CSA certified. But when I click on the 500 foot item it doesn't mention being CSA certified. Just wanting to confirm that this wire is CSA certified. Thanks.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, great service. Great price and free shipping . The other wire with the same specs but a different name brand and a hundred bucks more , makes no sense. Took me a half hour and a call to my electrician to find out that the other company wanted $100 more because they think their name is better. April 7, 2015

Fact two: Southwire Company 500 ft. 10-3 UF Wire Gauge Service Entry Electrical Cable is what it is. Great cable. Fact three: Home Depot shipped the 90 pound spool to my home by UPS for free! Fact four: I didn't believe it was possible. But it was. It happened. 5+ stars. April 9, 2013
