Customer Questions & Answers

line voltage drop

I am planning to run 450 feet cable along my driveway to light my front posts should i be worried about line voltage drop and if yes what cable you recommend
Asked by: simon
A big part of this is how much current are you going to draw? The voltage drop will increase with the current. If you use LED lighting in the posts, the current will be minimal and you probably won't even notice. Just make sure you run the correct size wire for the circuit: #14 for 15 amps, #12 for 20 amps. If you have a whole bunch of 100W halogen or mercury bulbs, your current will be much higher and you may want to go 1 or 2 wire sizes larger to minimize the drop.

Is this the right wire size to run 450 ft using a 20 Amp breaker underground for a gate opener and a water feature

Asked by: Builderjim
For such a long run, you would need a larger wire, and 3% is the maximum allowable voltage drop. By having 1 conductors per phase utilizing a #2 Copper conductor, the the voltage drop will be limited to 2.74% or less when supplying 20.0 amps for 450 feet on a 120 volt system. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Is this the right wire in conduit that I need to run 400 feet of cable underground to my garage for a hundred amp servic

Asked by: Roy1956hd
No, 400 feet is a very long run; therefore, it would require a much larger wire. 1 conductors per phase utilizing a #500 Copper conductor will limit the voltage drop to 2.76% or less when supplying 100.0 amps for 400 feet on a 120 volt system. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, great service. Great price and free shipping . The other wire with the same specs but a different name brand and a hundred bucks more , makes no sense. Took me a half hour and a call to my electrician to find out that the other company wanted $100 more because they think their name is better.
