Customer Questions & Answers

Is it safe to run the Aluminum SER wire ( 2-2-2-4) inside metal electrical conduit or PVC and what size pipe is appropriate?

I understand that certain wire can not be place inside metal electric conduit due to heat build up. I would like to run this wire from the inside main panel using a 100 amp breaker to a subpanel 90 feet away to feed a Dryer on a 30 AMP breaker plus a Washer on a 20 AMP breaker and an Air Conditioning Unit on a 30 AMP breaker within the Subpanel.
Asked by: Ozzie
it should only be sleeved in short sections where it would be exposed to damage 1.25 inch pipe will work, depending on draw this will work but remember most breakers will trip at 80% you should have no problem as long as all loads do not start at once

Can I run the 2-2-2-4 Aluminum SER jacketed wire above ground without putting inside conduit?

My detached garage is 20 feet from house and there is a deck attached from house to garage. Can I run this wire from house to garage under deck without putting in conduit? Garage is 2 story and bottom of deck is 8 feet up off of ground.
Asked by: McCoy
yes but it can not have any ground contact and must be secured properly

Does the neutral have a steel core in it?

Asked by: HC
No this cable does not have a steel core. Southwire Type cable is constructed with sunlight resistant Type XHHW-2 conductors or Type THHN/THWN conductors. Copper conductors are annealed (soft) copper. Cable assembly plus reinforcement tape are jacketed with sunlight resistant gray polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Available as 1 conductor with a concentric ground, 2 conductor with a round or concentric ground, or 3 conductor with a bare ground. SE cable is jacketed with gray sunlight resistant polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.
