Questions & Answers

Is it safe to run the Aluminum SER wire ( 2-2-2-4) inside metal electrical conduit or PVC and what size pipe is appropriate?

I understand that certain wire can not be place inside metal electric conduit due to heat build up. I would like to run this wire from the inside main panel using a 100 amp breaker to a subpanel 90 feet away to feed a Dryer on a 30 AMP breaker plus a Washer on a 20 AMP breaker and an Air Conditioning Unit on a 30 AMP breaker within the Subpanel.
Asked by: Ozzie
you are just asking for trouble ... There are subdivision in California that allow Aluminum wire some years ago. the place is a mess with wire issue and electrical. MY RECOMMENDATION IS USE COPPER WIRE AND DON'T SKIMP ON THE COST. That is the base of the whole project, if it is stated you can use 14/2 with a ground, I would use 12/2 with a ground (also know as Romex yellow jacket). I would use 10/2 with a ground for the load that you are going to use. I own my home and live else where here in Calif and seen what saving a few buck on the cost of electrical wire can do. look at the cost of the appliances, even if they were use, you are looking at a couple of thousand dollars and then replace because of burned up motor or over heat because of No current flow when they are all on. DO NOT SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT WITH USING aluminum WIRE OF ANY TYPE.

Can I run the 2-2-2-4 Aluminum SER jacketed wire above ground without putting inside conduit?

My detached garage is 20 feet from house and there is a deck attached from house to garage. Can I run this wire from house to garage under deck without putting in conduit? Garage is 2 story and bottom of deck is 8 feet up off of ground.
Asked by: McCoy
yes but it can not have any ground contact and must be secured properly

Total length needed is 120'. Would this wire be acceptable run through underground conduit to an out building with a 100

... With a 100 amp service?
Asked by: kris
I'm not really getting the answer I need either, I need to do the same for my Tuff Shed. Clearly the smart response is "Check with your local Inspector". Which I agree with, but I am also going to do the work myself (I have military training). Generally, it's been said through all of these posts that you can run it through a conduit, people on YouTube have done it through 60 or 80 PVC, so I am going to check first, share my plan with a licensed electrician, get the tips possible and finish the work from my workshop sub-panel to the house (without connecting) and have it inspected prior to energizing...I'm with you Kris, let me know what you think.

Can this cable be used as direct burial feeder cable?

Can this cable be used as direct burial feeder cable?
Asked by: Butch
No this wire is not rated for direct burial. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.
