Most likely the store you mentioned will stock #2 copper THHN/THWN-2 and not #2 copper Type XHHW. Call the store and ask the electrical departtment associate to be sure before you travel to the store. Both types are approved for use outside and underground when installed in conduit.

Each individual Home Depot store will carry certain products that are highly demanded in their area because of demand or codes. You can always special order this product through Home Depot and have it shipped to your home or the closest Home Depot store for pick up. It is available for special order.

Yes, aluminum XHHW is a good choice for pulling in conduit to a garage subpanel. You'll need to pull 3 #2s and 1 #6 ground, a total of 4 wires to the subpanel.
