I am looking for a Wire that is suitable for a 200 amp overhead service entrance. it has to be capable of wet location and sunlight resistant. It seems that the 4/0 XHHW will work but is only sold in a quantity of 500 ft., I only need about 115 ft.

The NEC in Article 396 allows Type SE Cables (such as Type SER) or Type USE Cable to be used.

do you arry a finer stranded no 6 wire than this one

I am going 500 ft to my solar panels one way and i need no 6 minimum. does this price the same in Idaho?
Asked by: trouble
: Yes, a 6 AWG THHN conductor has 19 strands. Both XHHW and THHN are 600V conductors. However THHN is not the best conductor to use for solar applications as the nylon jacket will crack and disintegrate over time in direct sunlight on a roof. The THHN conductor will still work properly – this is largely a cosmetic issue. However it will lead to concern about the longevity of the cable. Also, the NEC mandates additional ampacity de-rating for THHN conductors on a roof [see NEC 310.15(B)(3)(c)]. A better product to use that has 19 strands for a 6 AWG conductor is Type PV Wire that is specially made for solar applications. It is rated for 2kV rather than 600V, so it has thicker insulation: http://www.southwire.com/ProductCatalog/XTEInterfaceServlet?contentKey=prodcatsheetrnew10 This product can be ordered at the Home Depot Pro Desk if it is not stocked. I work for the manufacturer and cannot comment on Home Depot’s pricing.

The rolls were described as being 500 ft., but I found that 2 of the rolls were about 50 ft. short. I had to buy 2 more 100 ft. rolls to complete the project, and I also had to install a junction box to connect the extra lengths. The wire itself is fine, and it pulls through the conduit smoothly. However, the person in charge of measuring the length of the wire must have been having an "off day".
