Customer Questions & Answers

I am replacing my 100 amp breaker box and service wiring with a 200 amp to accommidate a spa.

If I use this wire will it allow me to not replace my exsisting 1.5 ' gal pipe with the planned 2" and still handle the increased load andmeet spec for the inspector?
Asked by: KimNelson
The NEC allows either 4/0 aluminum or 2/0 copper for a 200 amp service to a dwelling, however, this is SER cable (has 3 insulated and 1 bare conductor) and is not suitable for a 200 amp residential service entrance. If you want to reuse your existing 1 1/2" rigid galvanized conduit riser you should use 3 - 2/0 THHN/THWN conductors between the weatherhead and meter socket. That being said, you'll also have to upgrade your meter socket to 200 amps with a 1 1/2" hub and also upgrade the service entrance wiring between the meter socket and the new 200 amp panel. Grounding will have to be updated to current code too, but that is outside the scope of your question.

Can you bury this wire without conduit?

I am installing a 22kw Generac generator some 180 feet away from the service entrance due to noise considerations. For this length it has be determined that the 92 amps that the generator is capable of supplying, that this wire is more than adequate. However can I bury this wire without installing it into rigid conduit? That is the way ComEd brings the power to my house from the pole, only running rigid on the exposed areas to the meter! Is this the same wire that electric companies use when they bury the wire?
Asked by: fiveslo
SER cable cannot be used underground, not in conduit and not direct buried. It cannot be used underground at all.

Can I order this with 2 conductors and a bare ground?

What would be the order number if it's available?
Asked by: Donny
This is SER cable so the answer to your question is "No". If you want two conductors and a bare neutral or ground, you should order SEU cable.

is SER legal in NJ, or is SEU required for a NJ Service entrance drop to the meter box?

is SER legal in NJ, or is SEU required for a NJ Service entrance drop to the meter box?
Asked by: rbgrove2
If service entrance cable is allowd for service entrance in NJ it would be Type SE Style U, commonly called SEU cable. SER cable has too many conductors for a single phase service.
