Customer Questions & Answers

Is all the wires coated

Asked by: kkf44
This product has 3 insulated Type XHHW conductors and 1 bare ground conductor. The entire cable is sheathed with a PVC jacket. This cable is generally used as a subpanel feeder and does not fall under Ameren jurisdiction. Ameren's jurisdiction ends where their service drop connects to your service entrance wiring at the weatherhead on an overhead service.

What size wire do I use for 100 amp service to a sub panel?

Running 100 amp service to a sub panel in a detached garage. Need to know what size service wire to run from the main panel to the sub panel.
Asked by: Mike
#3 copper is what I'd use, but I'd install it in conduit. You cannot use SER cable. SER cable cannot be used underground; not direct buried and not in conduit. SER cable also cannot be used as an aerial cable. What you could use is direct burial rated aluminum Mobile Home Feeder (MHF).

what is the ampacity of this wire

what is the ampacity of this wire
Asked by: rocker
You must use the 60C column of Table 310.16 of the NEC to determine allowable ampacity; the ampacity for branch circuit use is 85 amps. However, as a branch feeder you can use this to feed a 100 amp subpanel.

If this SER 3-3-3-5 is not rated for underground in a conduit, what cable would you recommend ?

If this SER 3-3-3-5 is not rated for underground in a conduit, what cable would you recommend ?
Asked by: Bob
It isn't normally recommended to use any cable in conduit. I would normally recommend Type THHN-THWN copper conductors or Type XHHW aluminum conductors in a buried conduit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Piece of SER Wire for Hooking Up Sub Panel I purchased this product sight-unseen from the internet. It was not available at my local Home Depot store. I needed a piece of cable to run from my existing Square D load center to my newly mounted Square D sub panel. I was installing a 100 amp sub panel so this product was just what I was looking for. I prefer the copper wire due to its higher electrical conductivity. Understandably this wire is fairly stiff and makes bending it a little difficult but not impossible. I would say the wire is about 3/4" thick. Overall it is a great product. It was cut and shipped to my house within about 2 days and I received it about 6 days after making my online purchase.
