Can 5 feet of this wire be used to supply 12 volts to work with a 140 amp alternator under the hood of a car.
Asked by: wp100
No. this wire is too small and not automotive rated. For automotive use, u want what is called primary wire which is rated for the heat in engine compartments. For 140a @ 5' I would go with minimum #2 cu primary wire.

Do I still need a ground and neutral wire with this wire?

I have a shed that comes with the GE PowerMark Gold 125-Amp 8-Space 16-Circuit Indoor Main Lug Circuit Breaker Panel. The panel has (6) 20 amps breakers installed. I will use it as a sub panel in the Shed to power light, a portable air conditioner and power tools. The Shed is about 100 ft. from my house. Can I use this wire to bring electricity from my main box to the sub panel. If so, do I also need a separate ground and neutral wire with this one? Can I use this same wire as hot wire in the sub panel?
Asked by: FX
code requires wire #6 and smaller to be colored according to which type of conductor it is. For your setup u would need 2 blacks, one white and one green wire for the ground which means purchasing 3 different spools of wire. The ground wire can be #10 for 60a which is the maximum current this wire is rated for.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Order Wire Over The Interenet, Go To Local Store! I ordered 4 different wire colors, all 27' in length. No two matched in length, got various lengths from 25' to 28', no consistency at all. Apparently person cutting wire could not read a tape measure!!
