My fireplace opening is 43.5" wide by 30" tall. Since this unit is 36" to 38.8" wide (to the edge of the frame, I assume) by 27" to 32.75" tall, my fireplace will be a little taller than the unit. what is the best way to compensate for that?

If your fireplace opening is 30" tall, this unit will be too tall for your opening. The specifications provided show the back height is 28", the face front of the flange is 32.4". On the specifications it does not provide the height of the fireplace box behind the flange, which is 31". As for closing the gap on the sides, I used 1/8" Masonite(available at Home Depot in a 24"x36" sheet), centered the fireplace in the opening, installed 2x4's on the sides, cut and attached the Masonite to the 2x4 behind the fireplace flange. I painted the Masonite with flat black paint to match the stove. It looks great.
I also had to raise it higher and built a box of 2x4's for the fireplace to sit on, raising the fireplace to the top of my opening. I used the Masonite on the bottom front, too, to hide the 2x4s. Read Less

39 in. Traditional Built-in Electric Fireplace Insert with Glass Door and Mesh Screen is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful realistic fireplace This fireplace is very realistic. It has opening glass doors and a wire mesh heat screen which make it seem more realistic. Unfortunately, we were unable to use it. One measurement is not provided on the specifications. I was just hoping it would fit the existing firebox opening. It didn't. The height of the fireplace behind the front flange is 31". Very important to fit existing opening. . (My opening with steel beam support for bricks was 29 3/4") So sorry, too bad! :( If it fits your opening....it is so worth it! We ordered it online and shipped to the job site. It was well packaged and heavy. We were able to return it to the store with no issues. We had to order a smaller stove insert. It did not have the realistic features this one had, but it filled the hole and was very nice looking. We had to build a frame to enclose the sides and raise the fireplace higher to fit the opening.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful electric fireplace This is the second of these fireplaces that we have purchased and installed ourselves. The flame is amazingly realistic. Being able to turn on the flame without heat is wonderful. We had a problem with the first unit (the blower motor malfunctioned). The manufacturer was very responsive and sent a replacement part at no charge. I learned the value of having all of the working parts accessible through the front of the unit since this happened shortly after I finished the surround with tile and wood trim.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great insert. Great fireplace inserts. I installed it myself. Looks great. The size is perfect. I finished it with a marble tile and marble mantle. Cameout amazing. Instructions are easy to follow. As long as you are a little handy. Flame and logs look great. Love the different settings. We put it on daily. Even if we don't need the heat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again! Paid a mason to build a stone surround. Everyone who has come into our home believes it is gas. A couple of times my husband has told people it is electric (I never do) and they require convincing because they are certain he misspoke. In our prior home we had a masonry and a gas fireplace. We use this one so much more because it is easy, clean, attractive and we can control the heat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from we love it this is a great product.the fire box is heavy duty construction and the front facia looks just like the real thing.the electric flames and glowing embers are as good as any.the instructions are clear and easy.i paid an electrican $300.00 to hard wire it in.we are very happy because we are done with the hassel of building real fires.push a button and like magic a fire.everybody who has seen it likes it.our total cost for a 11 foot by 6 foot stacked stone fire place was $5632.00. that is with all labor hired out.that has to be 100% recovery of investment on resale
