Customer Questions & Answers

Can this winch be used to hoist and lower people? Is it stamped "this device is not designed to lower or raise people"?

Asked by: Ben
It CAN lift people, but the manufacturer can't recommend it because any device you add to it is not under their control. If you build a weak platform and it breaks and drops the person, they don't want you suing them.

Customer Reviews

1000 lbs. Hand Winch is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Small cog broke after a few uses The small cog broke in half after about five uses at about 500 lbs, or half the rating of the winch. The result could have been deadly if it had happened at the wrong time. I can not recommend this winch to anyone who might use it for more than very light duty. The small cog that broke appears to be made of cast iron, and hence is susceptible to brittle (sudden) failure. Also, the galvanized steel cable is not very flexible. I found that as the cable tensioned and the cable slid over itself, the strands in the cable tended to become damaged. For these two reasons, I would not recommend this product for more than light duty use or for prolonged use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality The cogs are 2 layers of light gauge stamped steel.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Winch cable coupling failed. Winch cable coupling failed on first use at a small fraction of the rated capacity.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from winch failed first year The small "keeper" which prevents the winch from unwinding failed during first few uses. It simply is not designed strong enough for normal usage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great little hand winch this is a great little hand cranked winch. its very easy to install and use, just be aware that you will need to buy your own hardware to attach it - it does not come with any bolts. It also doesnt come with any instructions, but its very straightforward: unscrew the bolt holding the cable pulley on to attach the winch frame to its anchor; reattach the cable pulley with the bolt you just removed (tighten it down as its a self-locking nut), then attach the hand crank.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lowest priced small hand winch The unit was ready assembled, just needed to attach handle. I am using it to raise and lower an awning. I removed the ore mounted cable and replaced it with a lead rope attached to the three ropes from the awning. It makes it so my 90 year old sister can manage the awning by herself. Very simple installation, and winch is just the right size.
