Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dave Small cog broke after a few uses
The small cog broke in half after about five uses at about 500 lbs, or half the rating of the winch. The result could have been deadly if it had happened at the wrong time.
I can not recommend this winch to anyone who might use it for more than very light duty. The small cog that broke appears to be made of cast iron, and hence is susceptible to brittle (sudden) failure.
Also, the galvanized steel cable is not very flexible. I found that as the cable tensioned and the cable slid over itself, the strands in the cable tended to become damaged.
For these two reasons, I would not recommend this product for more than light duty use or for prolonged use.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Beej Lowest priced small hand winch
The unit was ready assembled, just needed to attach handle. I am using it to raise and lower an awning. I removed the ore mounted cable and replaced it with a lead rope attached to the three ropes from the awning. It makes it so my 90 year old sister can manage the awning by herself. Very simple installation, and winch is just the right size.

this is a great little hand cranked winch. its very easy to install and use, just be aware that you will need to buy your own hardware to attach it - it does not come with any bolts. It also doesnt come with any instructions, but its very straightforward: unscrew the bolt holding the cable pulley on to attach the winch frame to its anchor; reattach the cable pulley with the bolt you just removed (tighten it down as its a self-locking nut), then attach the hand crank.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Paul winch failed first year
The small "keeper" which prevents the winch from unwinding failed during first few uses. It simply is not designed strong enough for normal usage.
