If you are looking to STORE a generator until you need it â THIS IS IT!
This is not my first generator, I have owned several. One has lasted me for 25 years! It was rarely used, but always ready to go â until here lately... I figure after 25 years, it has an excuse to go see the friendly guy at my local lawn mower shop.
But I wanted something BIGGER! I wanted something easier to store! I wanted something my wife could just flip a switch (OK, its a big one out at the pole) and turn a key and voila! Power when we need it!
I wanted something larger than the little 3kw Briggs unit I have relied on for my freezers and refrigerators and stand by use. I needed something portable that we could handle. I needed something we could take with us camping.
We live on a little farmlet in the middle of nowhere. We lose power often, sometimes for long periods of time. Something can happen 10-20 miles from us and we lose power. It's just part of living in the middle of nowhere...
I went shopping for a new generator. Something I wouldn't have to add chemicals to the gasoline or diesel for long term storage. I wanted something LOW maintenance and something that was easy to work on if the need arose. I wanted a name brand engine I could get service and parts for in the far future. I wanted something I could put away with little fuss and yank it out in a hurry if and when I needed it. I wanted something so easy to use my wife would have no trouble when and if I wasn't around.
THIS GENERATOR HITS THE MARK ON ALL COUNTS!
First and foremost â it runs on PROPANE. It has an easy to hook up to fitting that you can hook up the hose rig for a bottle OR you can hook it up to an alternate propane source! Our local LP gas company installed a hose rig with a regulator so I can roll this over to our big monster tank that feeds all the buildings on the farm and just hook it up in a matter of seconds. OR I can toss it in the truck to take to the other farms and use it off a bottle. There are aftermarket hose/regulator rigs that will allow you to hook up MULTIPLE tanks â look for them at RV supply stores and have someone help you if you don't know what you are doing. High pressure propane is nothing to play around with...
Second â it is electric start. I put an old motorcycle battery on it and it started right up! I stuck an old computer UPS battery on it and it started right up! I then tried just sort of jump starting it off of a tractor with just jumper cables connected to the dangling battery terminal wires on the generator â it started right up! Obviously it doesn't take all that many amps to get the engine started! My wife can literally walk over and cut off the mains with a big switch on the pole we installed and then hit the key start on the generator and she has power for about 20 days if we don't use the propane heaters in the houses.
Third â right size! This unit is heavy, but not so heavy that you can't toss it in the back of the pickup truck with a helper. It really is a 2-man move no matter what! But it is light enough to be easily rolled around by just about anyone of adult stature â even through the lawn grass. I wanted something portable and store-able, this unit fit that need.
Fourth â Fuel efficient. This unit swallows less propane than my old 3kw gasoline rig per hour. That means that we have about 20 days worth of power on our existing tank on the farm. I can live with that! That also means we don't need to carry as many bottles with us for a weekend camp out somewhere.
Fifth â it can take a load! I own a small farm and several larger operations. I DEPEND on my equipment! One of the first things I did was load this unit up with about 50 amps worth of load. I wanted to see it stumble, if it was going to. It barely blinked an eye... Even when the big 220v water pump kicked in â it just changed RPM's slightly and kept right on...
Sixth â Multiple starting options. Everything breaks â I don't care who you are or how much money you spent on something, the truth is, everything requires maintenance and everything will eventually break. Even my old trusty 25 year old generator had to give up sometime, that's why I bought THIS one! This unit can be pull started or key started â batteries don't last forever in storage! You will be able to get parts for this engine for many years.
A bit of advice, if I may... If you are looking to buy this and it is going to be used at home - Have an electrician install a big manual cut-over switch for your generator â no matter what kind you buy. Automatic switches are NOT your friend in hurricane and storm conditions where the power may come and go â surges come with the territory. With the manual switch, YOU decide when to cut over, and then back again. You also don't want to electrocute some poor lineman trying to work on downed power lines when he THINKS he has a cold cable to work with! INSTALL A SWITCH! You need to be able to totally isolate your home from the main power lines. Do NOT depend on your main breaker panel to cut you off the mains!
Also, make a little âhutâ. Just a simple little roofed structure with screens and vents rigged so rain doesn't easily get into it. Think BIG dog house! Mine has a couple of hose hangers â one for the electric hook up cable, one for the hose rig going to the big monster propane tank that feeds the farm. But it is small enough and light enough so that me and a helper can EASILY lift it move it, flip it over or what have you. This will protect the generator from enough rain and keep it dry enough to operate when you really need it to â in an emergency.... Just don't tell the meter reader that there isn't a dog in the dog house under the meter! That will be our little secret...
Also, whether it needs it or not, change the oil every spring â period. Even if you don't use it. And run it every once in a while â just to make it oil itself â go ahead play with it... It will need exercise too!
I know I will get quite a few years out of mine. It seems solidly built and with the proper care and maintenance, it will probably outlive my old 3kw gasoline generator who still hasn't managed to make it into my friendly mower shop repair man for repair.
25 years is a hard mark to achieve... We shall see...

I purchased this generator last spring (after several multi-day outages over the past few years). Hurricane Sandy just knocked us out for 5 days and this generator worked flawlessly. The propane was definitely the way to go. I purchased a tank every other week until I had 8 propane tanks (unlike gasoline, propane has an indefinite storage life). As I watched the neighbors run to the gas station before the storm and just after only to stand in huge lines for gasoline, I was thankful I had gone with the propane.
The generator came with oil that I assume is a break-in oil. The manufacturer recommends that you change the oil after the first 20 hours of operation (and every 100 hours after that). During the break-in hours it seemed to run a little rough. After I changed the oil at 20 hours, it ran very smooth. This generator also runs quieter than a gasoline generator and cleaner (less carbon monoxide output).
We ran most of our house during the outage. 2 full-size refrigerators, my neighbors full size freezer, a couple space heaters (unit was not powerful enough to run my central heat), 2 TVs, water heater, and several lights in the house. I did a bit of power management (shutting the generator off when we slept, etc) and after 5 full days I was half way thru the 8th tank.
By far it was the best money I have spent in years.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Â by Rich This product has everything I have been looking for.
LPG Propane is the feature that I've been looking for in a portable generator with a 7000 peak watt capability. The DC connection is a great addition. The electric start capability was the final selling feature.
Customer service and shipping were easy. The free shipping feature made the purchase decision.

CLEAN BURNING LPG 7000 PEAK WATTS ELECTRIC START PORTABLE PROPANE GENERATOR. Volts are exactly 120 & 240 just as it is to be. Electric start is great. It starts at the push of a button. I can run all I need for my house as a backup when needed. It is not very loud.
