Answer:
Hey Rich,
No, your 40 amp breaker will not accept #6 AWG stranded wire since that is rated for 50 amp service.
The lugs inside the breaker only go up to 40 amps due to safety. If you go up to 50 amps, you'll be fine.

HOM240CP is branch-mounted ONLY. Retaining kit required if used as backfed main breaker. Selection of retaining kit is based on catalog and series numbers of existing load center.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 40 AMP 2 pole breakers work great Work very well. Upgraded my Water Heater and added these for my Electrical upgrade from a tank to a tankless. February 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great price and good quality Good quality for a great price. For some reason, each of the breakers I purchased (four in all) looked like they had all been roughed up and/or possible used already. When I went to the store find replacements, they were all looking like that. So I assume it was the way they are built. As long as they work and hold up, I guess I am happy with them. June 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best value in circuit breakers Put the order in online at an excellent price. When we walked into the store an hour later it was waiting for me at the service desk. Bamm, in and out of there. December 4, 2012
