Questions & Answers

How do I cover the screw/putty?

Our brand new hardwood floors had two areas of significant cracking. The flooring person used this kit to tightent he floorboards. The creeks are virtually all gone, but there are rows of these screws! should they have put putty on the holes or not? Should I stain the screw holes or is there something to lessen the look of a row of screws in my new floor?
Asked by: Sharon
The screw head breaks off automatically when the screw is completely set below the floor. Then get some putty and fill the holes as directed on the putty. Worked VERY well for me.

Is this kit for above floor repair or under?

Asked by: dylan
Above. It drills down through the material into the subfloor and joist.

If I use this device to stop squeaks on a carpeted floor, can I later remove the carpet to expose the hardwood floor?

Asked by: JanisH
The way the tool works is that it counter sinks the threaded part of the screw into the sub floor. So, once the rug is pulled up there should be no visible or tangible points of the screw exposed.

It can be very difficult to find the exact spot to put the screw. The joist finder tool does not always help. In some cases, I had 7 or 8 screws in a concentrated area, all hitting a joist like they should, but there was still a squeak. I added one more screw about an inch from the others and the squeak went away. So you might have to put a lot of holes in the floor before you solve the problem, but it's absolutely worth it! I am hesitant to try this on the wood laminate problem areas because I don't want holes that I can see.

Finding the joist in an old house is "fun," since most are not 16" on center. But, aside from that, the smooth shank screw helped a lot. After getting everything screwed down, I was ready to snapped the head off the screws. Following the instructions and using the 3-prong clamp due to having carpet, I rocked left to right. Well, the screw held its ground and the 3rd arm of the 3-prong tool snapped right off. At this point, I just grabbed a hammer and gave the screw head an angular hit left and right. Pop! Good as gold......but the quality of that 3-prong tool could be improved (maybe metal vs plastic). That's the reason for the 4/5.

Floor still squeaks but the product did not ruin any of the carpeting and none of the screws broke mid-drill (leaving behind sharp spots). Therefore, out a little money but no harm in trying.

We had a squeek in our linoleum bathroom floor right when you would step every time walking into it and it was loud. I don't know what took me so long to try this product because it completely fixed it! I found the floor joist and then had to use 5 of the screws to secure the subfloor to joist and its like the noise was never there. Then I bough some floor putty to fill the tiny holes in the floor from the screws and you cant see them anymore. Looks like nothing ever happened, unless you stare at them. GREAT product.

Upon reading the reviews here, I opted to purchase the "Contractor's Pack" directly from the manufacturer so that it included the metal tripod stand. Home Depot - if you're reading this, please stock the Contractor's Pack (which includes 2x joist finders and screw bits)! That said, the functionality of this product is exactly as it says - find the joist, screw it in, snap off the head. That said, a few notes from my experience to hopefully help you on your way: * Finding the Joist - I took a metal wire coat hanger and bent it in a "C" shape so that the ends were about 12 inches apart and about 4-5 inches out from the center. I would use the joist-finder to drill a hole, and if I didn't hit a joist I would insert the C-shaped hanger and swirl it around in the hole to see if the joist was within the radius of the hole I just poked. * The Screws - Still pretty new at this DIY stuff, but definitely don't use an impact driver on them or the heads will split off early. If you're drilling on carpet, and a screw splits prematurely, i had the most luck just hammering it flat to the floor and then setting a new screw on either side. * The Joist Finder: This screw-tipped bit gets hot to the touch when drilling in and out of floors. Be careful to let it cool when you're working with it (and particularly if you have to do a bit-change on your drill). * Floor Boards Joints: I found in a few places that the floor boards were jointed on top of the joist, so I had to drill screws about a half inch apart over the joist in order to stop the squeak as it was coming from TWO boards on the joist, and not just one. I've got a number of rooms and hallways with squeaky floors. I would caution you that this is not a fast process if you don't know where the joists are. However, on the floors where i've used it the product has definitely decreased the squeaks from loud to barely noticeable (if not completely silent).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great! It worked great for me. It definitely takes some finesse and knowledge. First, you have to able to locate the floor joists. That is the most critical step. Once I located the floor joists, I marked them out with a string line and blue tape, to make sure I didn't miss them. I was able to successfully silence about 5 major squeeks in an upstairs bedroom. I used this product right through the carpet, just like the instructions said. If you're a pretty competent handyman, this product should work for you. If you're not too good with tools and things, then you're probably going to struggle with this. Worked good for me, though.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Exploratory Bit Broke The bit used to check if you found the joists broke after one use (there are two but chose a different method to find these). Added 4-6 screws on either side of the affected area, but it didn't make things any better. Threw product into the void that is my garage. I personally wouldn't recommend this product but other users may have better results. It may just be that my walls are not joined probably with the flooring... or something. Will likely try an apoxy next.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not help After reading all the reviews it seamed that this product was hit or miss. Well it was a miss in my case. The product did not fix any of my squeaks after using every screw in the package on a very small area. After further review of my issue, it sounds as if my squeaks are between the joists. My likely only option now will be to pull up the carpet and replace the subfloor, which I have now made much more difficult for myself by adding 30 screws into the joists.
