which of the metal or aluminum balusters, shoes and rake collars can be painted. not clear. some al and some metal can and cant be painted.

is it the powder coated ones cannot be painted? would very much like to be able to get all pcs that can be painted. homeowner not satisfied with finishes, would like to paint over with a black satin. please advise
Asked by: Moon
Hi Moon, the finish on our balusters, shoes and rake collars will all accept a secondary coat of finish. The surfaces must be prepped before painting by cleaning the surfaces of all dirt, debris and film left by handling, shipping, etc., then applying a dark primer base before applying the finish coat. For best results, the Satin Black finish should have primer applied as the glossy finish will not provide adhesion for secondary coats of finishes. If you have additional questions, we'll do our best to help you. Thank you!

What size Allen wrench is used on the collar

Asked by: TL
Thank you for you question TL the flat shoes require a 6.0 millimeter size Allen wrench. You might have to go with a smaller Allen wrench due to the powder coat applied to the shoes, otherwise the 6.0 millimeter size should work. Thanks again and for further questions/concerns please reach out to your local Home Depot store or contact use at 678-495-0776 or email us at

Do they make these for round balasters?

Asked by: Nums
Thank you for your question Nums, we currently do not offer a iron shoe for a round baluster. It is only offered for our square 1/2" or 5/8" iron balusters. Thank you and have a great day

0.5 in. Satin Black Flat Metal Baluster Shoe is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flat shoe good;angled shoe not so much We purchased flat shoes for the level bannister and angled shoes for the staircase. The set screws in the angled shoe made the shoe ride up and become unstable. This is a design problem that caused our carpenter to be required to re-tap the set screw holes from the side instead of the front of the shoe. This was an expensive fix in labor and time. The angle shoes need to be redesigned to eliminate this defect. If I had known of this issue, I would have selected a different product the defect is not apparent until the banisters and spindles and shoes are cut and in place and ready for final set screws. In other words not until it is too late and way too expensive to change course.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Screws are very poor I bought over 200 of these and at least 1/3 have a screw that strips out as soon as the first turn is made making the shoe unusable since the screw won't come out far enough to allow the baluster to fit inside. The others that didn't strip immediately did not allow firm tightening and would strip at that point. Had to caulk each one so it would stay in place. Very poor - definitely use a different shoe.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't fit While, in retrospect, I feel a little stupid, these did not fit the balusters I bought in the store. The store was out of stock so I assumed the online parts were the same. They are NOT! The balusters in the store are 5/8" and these are 1/2". Unfortunately the job site is 3 hours from the nearest store and I discovered the size difference on the job site. In order to return them to the store I had to phone Home Depot to get the order number (I didn't keep the e-mail). Just one more hassle.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed. The hex head on the set screw stripped on more then half of the 24 I purchased. I had to grind down a small screw driver to make them work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Piece But Make Sure You Have Correct Allen Wrench Size I recently used these to cap off my iron balusters on a newly installed railing. They look great and appear to be well made. My only complaint is that my standard Alan Wrenches did not fit the set screw. Luckily I found one that fit reasonably well in my junk drawer. It would be nice if they manufacturer would tell you what size wrench you need since it is not a standard size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed Installing new balusters. Shoes were precision made and kept balusters in place while hiding my "imperfections."

Rated 3 out of 5 by from info i found out the set screw is a T15 star bit not an allen wrench size!!
