Customer Questions & Answers

Do these shoes need to be screwed in? We had a professional installer and was told it is not necessary.

Asked by: mstexas
Unfortunately due to a design flaw screwing the angled shoes in will not be doable. You will end up either gluing them in place or counterbalancing the opposite side of the angle from the inside in order to get them to install without a significant gap at the top of the angle.

Cannot seat properly.
Asked by: Herman
Thank you for your question Herman, It is slightly smaller so we can compensate the paint layer. We have heard that there have been seating issues with too much space between the baluster and shoe. we are making slight adjustments with our future production to eliminate the excess space for a tight fit. For a current fix to your issue, we recommend using some epoxy to hold the shoe down on the proper angel you are needing. Keep in mind the shoe is not used to secure the baluster from moving, its primarily used for decorative purposes and to hide usually the larger hole made when a wooden baluster is being replaced with a iron baluster ...which has a smaller width at the base. Thank you

Like other users have experienced, when you tighten the allen wrench screw on these shoes it causes the shoe to tilt and leaves a gap on the one side. Very poor design. They look beautiful sitting loosely but always result in a gap after tightened on a 1/2" baluster.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won't Sit Flush Incredibly frustrated. Installed a beautiful new wrought iron staircase. Meticulously set each baluster, and centered based on the exact fit of the shoes for both top and bottom. All the shoes were centered and fit flush perfectly! After the balusters were set and the shoes were ready for screwing in place we noticed immediately that once you tighten the screw it offsets the angle and there is a significant gap! So angry!!! Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing we can do to rectify this situation other than glue them in place, or offset the opposite side with a washer and a wad of paper, which is utterly ridiculous. My shoe looks exactly like the other reviewers that supplied pictures of their gaps. The manufacturer needs to remedy this issue immediately or quit selling this product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from waste don't waste your time on this product when you tighten the allen screw the squareness of the shoe is thrown off..i tried drilling a small recess for the allen screw to rest in and it still didn't work

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Oversized for shoe rails Buyer beware if you want to use these with shoe rails. The specifications state that they are 1.25" X 1.25", which is the exact width of the milled section of the shoe rail. However, they are 1.312" X 1.312, so there is no way that they will fit into the shoe rail. So now it's either buy a grinding wheel to cut them down to size or have a terrible looking banister.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! I had used these previously from HD and other suppliers. They all seem to have had the same issues with not sitting tight and set screw stripping. I just did another project and used the 6.0 millimeter size Allen wrench and made sure not to over-tighten the screws. Now my stairs look great!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Successful Project!! Not a difficult project at all and looks great, but you have to plan and lay out the parts you need. The angled shoes may need to be belt sanded or touched with a grinder because no stair is going to be at the exact angle as the shoe.

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find an upper shoe that would match the angle of our stair rail. This is easier said than done! These shoes did not. I did find another, more expensive product that allows the angle of the shoe to be adjustable. HOWEVER, when it came time to install the balusters, my carpenter pointed out that the balusters sold by Home Depot would fit into the existing holes under the stair rail without needing an upper shoe. WOW, what a savings and the finished stairway looks great!
