Sam, this newel has a solid wood core that is drillable for standard newel bolt kits. The loose base "telescopes" up and down the newel post allowing you to set different rail heights (ie: rake rail on a stair vs. balcony rail), yet keeping the same height at the base. Sam, this newel has a solid wood core that is drillable for standard newel bolt kits. The loose base "telescopes" up and down the newel post allowing you to set different rail heights (ie: rake rail on a stair vs. balcony rail), yet keeping the same height at the base. So to answer your question, the newel core is not hollow, it is solid. The newel base is loose, allowing installers to cut the newel post core to desired lengths, then placing inside the loose core so that all newel posts in the balustrade have bases at the same height. Melissa, thanks for the question. We have a newel post with a bottom base that acts as a sleeve. It allows you to cut the main newel post to your desired rail height, and keeps the bottom bases at a uniform height. They are available in Red Oak (internet# 204791524), and Poplar (Internet# 204791441). You should be able to cut/paste those internet numbers into the search bar on homedepot.com to find that Read More
