Although some of the reviews I read on these treads indicated poor product quality, I was absolutely satisfied with all of the treads and risers which were delivered directly to my home. Since we use the staircase every day, I opted to finish all of the pieces before cutting and installing them. However, with a new 60-tooth blade for my table saw and masking tape along the cut lines, the edges all came out clean, with no splintering.
I ordered twelve treads (nine standard and three double-return) and fourteen risers, and every piece arrived in excellent condition. I finished the wood with Minwax "Colonial Maple" stain and four coats of polyurethane, and used both glue and finishing nails for installation.
I am quite satisfied with the final outcome.
Thank you, Home Depot!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Purpleflurp1414 Beautiful Product, Easy to Install
These made my previously carpeted stairs a beautiful focal point. Easy to do, my husband and I are average do it yourselfers, not professionals. We were able to install these and the risers on our 6 steps in an afternoon. Highly recommend!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Deanie Nice looking retread
We installed retreads on our stairs three years ago. The retreads stained beautifully and were easy to install. Be sure to purchase the template. The stairs look great. However, we had to replace one of the retreads this year because the front of it broke off. The front piece is a separate piece. We had some remodeling done this year, and it probably broke off from men going up and down the stairs so much. Under normal conditions, I think there would no be a problem.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by William Poor Quality, Warped, One Received Broken, Others Cracked
Absolutely unsatisfied. Most of the treads arrived with a warping across the full length and very noticeable. Nearly impossible to install because they wouldn't lay flat. The boxes arrived looking like they fell off the plane on their way to me. One tread had a big piece broken off, and several have cracks in them. Horrible, and HD doesn't stock them in store so I'm screwed. Do not purchase. $350+ that I'll never see again.

A couple of the treads had some minor checks in the ends of the boards as to be commonly expected with oak, but they didn't advance more than a couple of inches. And although the checks are potentially a weakness in the grain they had not yet caused any significant separation, they were mainly dark streaks in the oak grain and only gave the wood more character. Furthermore since these treads are to be installed onto subtreads with urethane adhesive, the treads will be completely anchored so that checks can never develop any further or separate.
The treads are straight, flat, no bowing, no cupping.
I think these treads are as good as you'll find in the tread market, and for this price they are definitely better than I expected.

You will need a table saw, miter saw, nail gun, orbital sander and a belt sander. I bought the unfinished red oak treads and managed to match my Bruce hardwoods fairly closely with Sherwin-Williams stain. After sanding with 120 grit and wiping down, I applied 4 coats of Minwax Poly for floors over several days. sanded between coats 1 & 2 with 400 grit.
I bought some 1 x 8 x 8' finger jointed primed planks to use as risers and their true 7 1/4" worked great without ripping them down.
The Stairtek treads were outstanding red oak and they worked out just fine. I did need to sand the sides of the built up moulding with the belt sander and 50 grit as they are 1/16 proud on the sides. I used PL Urethane adhesive and 18 gauge brads in my Ryobi One gun to secure the treads and the risers.
