Customer Questions & Answers

The old tread I want to cover is 1.5 inches thick. Will the new nose of this product cover it?

Asked by: Walt
Did want to add that the lip overhang is beautiful decorative and 2".

How thick, or deep, is the front trim that covers the existing tread.

Although the tread is .625, the extra dimension of height of the trim on the front of the tread is not listed--this is a vital consideration in planning installation over existing treads.
Asked by: mdj
The front is 2",it has a lip so it will cover it

Are these exactly 36" wide?

Are these exactly 36" wide? Some of my stairs are 36.5 or so inches wide... If these are only 36" exactly they'd be too short.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product - couldn't be happier! I'm a novice to this type of project - but ordered these and the corresponding risers to spruce up my existing staircase (in my 125+ year old home). My home is a historic duplex - so my staircase is a bit more narrow than most, I would guess. I ordered these so I could get 2 stairs per each tread (and the same with the riser). I had the product delivered (to the chagrin of my UPS driver lol) - all arrived in good condition - after sanding/staining/polyurethaning - they turned out just perfect. (It's a good amount of work - but I prepped the stair treads and risers in 2 days - and sawed/installed them in 2 more - i'm not the most proficient DIYer). I couldn't be happier with this product!

Used Minwax Honey 272 on treads and only a poly sealer on the risers. Did one coat of stain and three coats of poly. If your existing treads has a nose cut it off - I used a jig saw. Minor splintering cutting the edges of the treads - I used a circular saw instead of my miter or table. Used adhesive and 2" finishing nails - tried to hide nails with riser edge. I had structural issues with bottom stringer so took much longer to install. Staining took 4 days. Skirt boards took 4 hours. Install of treads and risers after everything was prepped took 6 hours.

The retead was an affordable alternative in comparison to quotes to pull out and replace existing treads and risers. I tackled the staining myself and had a flooring person install. Overall I am satisfied with the outcome.... yet there were a two treads that cupped within a few days after install. It may have been due to the installer's use of improper adhesive. I had him pull out and reinstall 2 new treads making sure he used Loctite PL Premium.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisfied Cutomer Although some of the reviews I read on these treads indicated poor product quality, I was absolutely satisfied with all of the treads and risers which were delivered directly to my home. Since we use the staircase every day, I opted to finish all of the pieces before cutting and installing them. However, with a new 60-tooth blade for my table saw and masking tape along the cut lines, the edges all came out clean, with no splintering. I ordered twelve treads (nine standard and three double-return) and fourteen risers, and every piece arrived in excellent condition. I finished the wood with Minwax "Colonial Maple" stain and four coats of polyurethane, and used both glue and finishing nails for installation. I am quite satisfied with the final outcome. Thank you, Home Depot!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for DIY stair project My husband and I installed these treads over subfloor stairs where carpet used to be. They installed rather quickly with the help of the stair tread guide tool, so I would highly suggest purchasing that in addition to the treads. Also, check the condition of your risers--you might want to purchase new ones to install with your treads (available on HomeDepot.com). I didn't and then had to buy them in a second order, which held up our process. Here is the helpful installation video from the manufacturer: http://www.stairtek.com/index.php?view=how
