Is the bevel up or down on this iron?

Asked by: Ryan
The blade is able to be flipped either way by loosening the screw on top that you can see in the picture.

Are the handles made of wood or plastic? Perhaps this product has changes since the reviews were added but the product specifications says it's wood and the reviews say it's plastic. Would like to know before I order this through Home Depot.
Asked by: Jon
They're made of plastic. That is indeed a mistake in the specifications. I think it's always been a mistake, because I believe Stanley stopped making these with wood handles both in the US and UK before this website was created.

Customer Reviews

14 in. Bailey Bench Plane is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value I did a normal tune-up before using it (flattened & paste waxed the sole, sharpened the blade, flattened where the lever cap contacts the chip breaker, and made sure the frog seated well). It took less flattening on the sole than I thought I would have to do for a plane in its price range. It works very well. One item of note is that the handles are plastic (in case you are expecting wood handles). But that fact is noted in the product specs. All in all, it does exactly what I need it to do as a hobbyist for a reasonable price. Just make sure you do the tune-up, as that makes a world of difference in performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The classic American jack plane There is an awful lot of information about this plane online, thankfully, and you should definitely read up on what this is, the No. 5 Stanley jack plane, before you buy it. If you already know all about jack planes and their place among bench planes in general, well, then you're probably not reading reviews on it online as a way of deciding to buy it. There was a time when this was among the five most important tools a homeowner owned. This was among the last five tools to be sold for cash during the Great Depression, and among the first five a GI returning from service in WWII would buy for his new home. But in this day and age, this tool is nowhere near as important to the basic home garage shop as it once was. The way wood is sold has changed drastically, power jointers and planers are on the market at reasonable prices, and this tool has been relegated to the dustbin of history except in certain specific instances and among hobbyist woodworkers. The reason is that there are few things as spiritually satisfying to a woodworker as skillfully planing a piece of rough-cut wood by hand to to perfect straightness and smoothness. There's all kinds of information online about how to do this with this plane, all kinds of videos, all kinds of pages explaining the uses of different bench planes. Your first plane these days should be a block plane. Your next plane, after you get your first woodworker's bench, should probably be a Stanley No. 4 smoothing plane (sometimes itself incorrectly referred to as a "jack plane." The No. 4 plane is traditionally 9 3/4" long and it's best at leaving wood very smooth. HD sells it online. Stanley sells an inexpensive version of the No. 4 tool these days to deal with the many No. 4 knockoffs sold worldwide, but the Stanley "Bailey" version of the No. 4 is much, much better than their economy version. Only after you've worked with these planes and learned quite a bit about tuning and sharpening planes should you think about buying a jack plane. This is probably the first jack plane you should buy. Once you get this plane properly tuned and sharpened (again, there's plenty of information on that online), and learn how to use it from the same sources, there are few things more fun and central to the core principles of traditional woodworking than turning out perfectly square and smooth stock with a jack plane. You'll probably never make a buck on it, but it is still the same pure joy it has been throughout human history. Good luck!

The plane came in great condition and so far seems to be holding up just fine. Stanley has a good long-term reputation for wood planes. I wish that they had not changed the handles to plastic though. They are unable to be repaired when they break or split. Wood is much easier to manipulate and keep in pristine condition.
