Can this be used to power a house, with an electrician doing the necessary wiring with breakers or switches?

I just want to make sure before I purchase this on sale, that it can be used for this purpose. I understand it may not be able to power all the items in my house simultaneously based on the load vs. the 8000 watt update, but want to make sure that a skilled and licensed electrician could wire it in such a way as to with a plug so it could be used as a house generator as well as a portable unit. thanks

Yes with qualifications. YOu'll have to pick and choose what you run. Look at the on line wattage charts to get an idea.

Customer Reviews

8,000-Watt Storm Portable Generator with Electric Start and Removable Generator Panel is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 260 hours of almost continuous use and no issues. I bought this generator last year after Hurricane Irene and had a transfer switch installed to power a well pump, furnace, fridge, microwave and a few other appliances including some lights. We just got power back today 12 days after Hurricane Sandy blew in. The generator has been in near continuous use for this time save for oil changes every 20 hours and refueling. No issues to report and it handled all our power needs extremely well. Very satisfied with this product and would recommend to anyone shopping for a good size weatherproof generator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The generator performed flawlessly during the MD power outage in July 2012 July 2012 was the second time I had to use the generator for an extended period and I'm pleased with its performance. The generator runs the entire house with all appliances pluged and ready to go. The circuit breaker on the generator only popped once when my wife ran the hair dryer and iron at the same time. It ran continuosly without shutdown for 72 hours in temps in the upper 90's to100's. Fuel consumption was as advertized and it ran pretty close to 12hrs on a single tank. The only drawback is the weight of generator with the wheels provided. After sitting a while the tires develop flat spots that make it unpleasent to move. The Tires are really to small for this generator and its heavy when trying to move it. overall its a great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product - Flaws are minor I just received this generator, it arrived in good condition and is pretty easy to put together. You will need a funnel to put the oil in, and it doesn’t come with oil like some of the others. It takes about 1 ½ quarts of 10w 30 oil. The battery was easy to hook up after removing the ground cable from the frame to give it slack then reattaching it to the frame. The good …. Performance … Out Standing … Starts quickly and easily with both electric start and pull rope. I have run the unit 3 hours to start the break in and this unit runs my whole house and doesn’t even breathe hard!!! Yes whole house air, refrigerator, 2 computers, TV and some lights. The only time it bogged the motor down was when the A/C would kick on, but after that it ran as smooth and easy as when there was no draw on it! I didn’t try to turn on microwave, washer or drier or coffee maker. The Bad... The Bad… Shipping, UPS wanted me to pay for the truck to have a lift gate, I told them no way, I get free delivery, they checked and said ok and the driver delivered it and took it to the back of the house so it worked out ok. The handles, they make the unit feel as heavy as it really is, some units have the handles lift the weight so its over the wheels not in your hands and on your back. The wheels are too small and get flat spots from the weight so it is hard and wobbly to roll, but I only go the length of my garage and place it just outside the door so its not much of a problem for me. Over all.. this is a great performer, and great value considering if you buy a cheaper model with same numbers, 10,000 and 8,000 you will have to build a small house to make it useful because you cannot run the others in the rain and what good is an emergency generator if you can’t run it in the rain. Also I have had some of the cheaper models with same engine size and power rating, that would not run the whole house with the A/C. I am going to finish the break in period and run it for another 5 hours if it fails in any way I will post it here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great looking product and powerful. Just has some design issues putting it together. Great generator. Very quiet for the size. Only issue is the cables for the battery. Need to be longer so you can take off the battery and screw on the cable to the posts. Had an issue with the negative cable. Since it was short and I had to pull it to reach the battery post the cable post came off the wire. Had to call an order a new one. They sent the wrong ones for another generator. Had to order a new one and they got it right. Once I got it all hooked up and got the gas in it it fire right up. Have not had to use it yet for a power outage but looking forward to using it. Have it set up to power the whole house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Generator with muscle Bought this generator based on the brand and the all-weather claim. Used it over night when the power went out ina storm and it worked great. Powered everything I needed. Also ran in the rain without any issues. Put it outside next to the garage and ran the cord through the garage to my outside fridge. Very pleased.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The generator suffered a catastrophic failure after 37 minutes. During a power failure caused by a snow storm on October 29th, I connected the generator to my transfer switch & started it. I slowly added load to it and it worked fine for 37 minutes, at which time the crankshaft broke. I have been talking to the manufacturer for several days to arrange repair or replacement. so far no luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Home Depot was GREAT; Not so with Stanley I've only written one other review over the years for a great product I bought. I am writing this one in the hope of helping others decide. Starting off I want to make clear that all my contacts with Home Depot, both on-line and in my local store, were great ! Never a problem with them. They were always very kind and did everything possible to make me happy and resolve the problems I was having. As you will read, Stanley was a different story. I was determined to purchase this model because it is the only "all weather" generator I could find; believe me I did weeks of research, both on-line and in store. What's the use of buying an emergency generator if you cannot use it during an emergency when it might be raining or snowing? So, I order the Generator and it arrives in a very short time. However, when it arrived there was a large fork lift hole in the bottom of the box. Looking inside, the frame was crushed and almost broken in half by the fork lift. So I refused acceptance, sent it back, and called Home Depot for a replacement. In a few days the second one arrives. Certainly problems setting it up. First, Home Depot includes the battery, which is great. Connecting it is another story. There is a metal plate that hangs over the battery to protect it from the rest of the generator. This must be removed first by taking out two screws. The way Stanley designed the connection to the battery makes it very difficult and time consuming to connect the cables. Before you reinstall that metal plate, be aware that there is a oil cap/oil fill hole on both sides. Ensure you securely tighten that oil cap then reinstall the metal plate. The oil actually goes in on the other side. Also be aware that Stanley did not include a dip stick to check the oil. You must open the oil cap and visually check. Stanley says to fill the oil until it runs out. This is a very messy way to check or add oil. Okay, all done, I start it up. Runs great. The problem was that the 5 way digital meter, which tells you oil status, frequency, running hours, etc, does not work. I called Stanley direct and they promised me they would call me the next day with an answer. I waited 3 days. Stanley said they would send me a new meter out the very next day and send an e-mail with the tracking number. The next day came and went; no e-mail. I called the second day, and they made the same promise. The next e-mail. I called the 3rd day and they made the same promise. No e-mail. In the end, I called Stanley 6 days in a row before they finally sent the meter out. When it arrived, I removed the old meter, installed the new meter, and that did not work either. I called Stanley back and they just threw their hands up in the air; send it back they said. So, I called Home Depot and they sent a third generator. This one arrived okay, works great, although I did not actually have a power outage yet. I've connected many things to it while testing and it provides power with no problem. Its great that it is all weather. As I said, I only stayed with Stanley because of the all weather design. I believe that the quality of the generator is very good; I just had bad luck with the first two models. My only real complaint would be Stanley Customer service. They promised me 6 days in a row they would send me out the new meter. There were some questions I asked that they could not answer. And they did not call me back as they promised---twice. !! They were nice people, but they were very "unhelpful." I am rating this 5 stars for the generator itself because the generator looks great and runs great. Starts right up every time, is not very loud as far as generators go, and I believe it will come thru for me in a power loss. I am not rating Stanley customer service. I am having an electrician install a transfer switch in my garage next to the circuit panel. That way I only need to run the supplied power cord from the generator to the transfer switch. You can just run power cords if you like, but installing a transfer switch solves that headache. Also be aware that the neat, removable power panel that comes with this model is NOT waterproof. It must be inside. I would certainly recommend this product itself. On the other hand...good luck if you need to call Stanley.
