Somewhere, along with the orphaned socks and all the pencils that middle school students lose, there is a sea of Stanley Utility Knives. Other companies have copied these or knocked them off in one form or another for at least 30 years, but Stanley still makes the best ones. I like to have several around the shop, hng from a peg wherever I might want to use one. I keep one in my desk drawer as well, and in the glove box, and a couple that I put in my pockets. In fact, sitting at my desk right now, I can see three. But it's a good bet that the next time I need one, they will all be hiding. So I buy a new one every now and then just to appease the gods.

Everytime I visit my local Home Depot, I always seem to gravitate to the utility knives in the tools section of the store.
I have always admired the design of the Stanley Classic 99 (Model No. 10-099).
The handle feels so super smooth in the hand, is not as big or bulky as some others with the blade offering 5 retractable positions.
Some very important highlights are:
* Smooth handle with a slender profile offering a comfort grip
* Extra blade storage inside handle
* Screw locking design prevents the blade from popping out during heavy-duty cutting tasks
What has always attracted me to this particular design is the minimalist appeal.
Other fancy utility knives compete for your attention by offering gee-whiz features such as quick blade change or some fancy way they fold (and that's fine to add to your collection).
This knife does not attempt to wow you with that.
What this offers is simplicity in itself.
I've seen many interesting designs over the decades of my life and love them so much!
If I were to summarize this review in just two words it would simply be, "nothing fancy"!
Rated for everyone (who enjoys the pleasure of such a classic utility knife)

I have been using this knife for 30 years for construction electric. it is great, none are better. The Stanley blades do not fit right. The two hole blades are the wrong type, I have used the lenox four hole bades for years and they work great. I was in a bind today and bent the small hook on the back of the slider to make my stanley blades fit and now it wont close all the way. I will buy two new ones tomorrow and make sure I always have the four hole blades that fit the 99e. I have used other knives but this is the best for a kline leather tool belt. the knife fits in the front pocket next to my stripers perfect and is ready to use in seconds and goes back just as fast, all without looking. wont ever use anyting else for work. also is strong for prying and hammering lol.

I tried to insert the blade twice and gave up. Video was not helpful. No instructions on package. Placed unit in recycle container. Pickup is on Tuesday.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JoePro Stanley Retractable Blade Knife
My previous utility knife was pretty old, such that it required that I unscrew it to take it apart and expose the blade.
The Stanley blade is very easy to use, and you can substitute other blade styles as well. I personally use the "Hook" style blades frequently to remove golf grips from clubs without damaging the graphite shafts. But this knife is handy for so many things, and it's not flimsy like those cheap plastic ones where you break off a section of the blade when it gets dull.

Frustrating. Stanley must have manufacturing tech issues. This is the 2nd knife I bought that the blades that came with the knife did not slide into the holder at all. I am very mechanical and couldn't do it. The Stanley customer service video on how to replace the blade is nothing short of awful. No close-ups of the insides, etc. I am giving up and taking it back.
