Questions & Answers

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788
Asked by: Vito
Warning: Blades are sharp and can cause serious injury. Be extremely careful when handling blades. Wear eye protection and dispose of used blades properly, such as wrapping in duct tape. FULLY EXTEND THE BLADE. Press down and forward again on the slide button until the button is in the full front of the top slot (0 through 3 in the below picture). Note- the blade must be extended beyond the 3rd detent position. This will cause the slide button to remain in a down position, allowing the blade release button to operate. PRESS AND HOLD THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE KNIFE. (Step 4 in the below picture) Note- if the blade is not fully extended beyond position 3) , the blade release button will not work. Remove the old blade carefully. Insert new blade. NOW, RELEASE THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON. ENSURE THE BLADE IS LOCKED IN PLACE. If the blade does not retract, try carefully giving a slight tug on the blade to reseat.

This product is a prime example of how far they have fallen. Why does something as simple as a utility knife have to be so complicated? From just getting the embedded unrippable packaging out of it, to even being able to load the thing, every "feature" of this thing is unbearable. Don't bother consulting the instructions, they're completely useless. All I wanted is something that I can cut open boxes with and this product fell woefully short. The only easy thing about this thing is the aforementioned unrippable packaging, so that it can be easily returned.

They couldn't make it any more difficult if they tried. All I want to know before I throw it as far as I can is how do you load the first blade!! I got it with the blade exchange, great, but how do you load the first ONE??? Not to mention the packaging is like an IQ test, I mean really, are you kidding me!!! Do yourself a favour and buy the cheapest knife you can get it'll work a lot better. I bought another Stanley, same model, thought the 1st may have been defective but nope, they're all the same. Absolutely horrible!!!!!

Didn't think I'd have to check reviews first before buying something so basic, but I was wrong. Got home to find out that it doesn't work. The silver lever refuses to budge, and therefore, I can't load the blade nor use the knife. Plus, the instructions are a joke. It only tells you how to remove a blade. Well, we can't remove a blade until you let us know how to INSTALL a blade. Gees! And be careful with removing the blades from the handle. The 3 blades are just sitting in there, so they fall out into your hand if you don't know what to expect when you open it, and they are super sharp. Really disappointed because it's already delayed my project for 4 days because I gotta return it! I certainly won't be buying this knife next time.

Are you kidding me? What genius designed this? I fought with the packaging at least 15 minutes. There were basically no directions. I still can't get the blade in correctly. This is not worth my time and I will buy a new one from another manufacturer.

I never thought I'd have to look at a youtube video to learn how to insert a blade in a utility knife! And even after understanding the process, I apparently lack the hand strength to push the yellow button in far enough to engage the blade. It's going back if I can find the receipt.

But unless you enjoy the challenge of a chinese puzzle in the middle of a project (when it's time to switch out the blade) maybe it's not for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hope you get a good one. I didn't. I'm glad some reviewers had no problem with changing the blade. My experience was different. The instructions were little help, so I went to online videos. They were clear and helpful. The trick is that you have to push the blade slider an extra bit beyond the "fully extended" setting. I understand that. But it won't go. I've pushed until my thumb is sore and my nail is cracked. I've used a flat screw driver to push down and forward. It just won't go that extra bit. I can put the blade in the end, but it won't lock into place and won't retract. Apparently there are good ones and bad ones. Mine is definitely bad and going back to the store. I won't get another of these.

Blade stopped retracting and now I can't get it to retract or to let go of the blade so I can try again. From the reviews it seems that your odds are 50/50 if it works or not. Not quality in my eyes.
