Customer Questions & Answers

What is the length of the portion of the assembly that fits over the 4x4 post? I have bought a six foot post and want to know how deep I can sink it

Asked by: sailorman
on a 6.5 foot post it is required to go down two feet. Otherwise the sections will not join properly. If you have a six foot post then you can go down 18 inches but I would recommend concrete in the hole for stability.

Can I purchase a replacement flag?

Asked by: Jeanne
Step 2 does offer replacement parts but they don't have them readily available online. They have a Customer Care number on their web site and an e-mail you can submit a request to as well. Hope that helps.

Ref: Hudson mail Box Model #534299. How many inches away from the road side , should the mounting 4 x 4" post, be fixed on the ground?

Asked by: Peekay
Just in case others have this question I'll answer it even though I see this is from 2014! The post to front edge of the mailbox is about 22 inches. We don't do street side mailboxes where I am so I don't know where the front of the mailbox should go but that should at least give you a good idea of the overhang, factor in your roadside distance and you should be set!

My installer will only install if he can sink the post 3' deep due to frost heave. He is also going to use concrete to support. So can I buy a 7' post and the unit will fit over the remaining 4' above ground?
Asked by: Nancy
We do not reccommend this however, if you choose to do this, you would have to check with your local retailer that sells posts and see if they do.

The weight of the mailbox and newspaper holder pulls the top post forward. Placing 2 screws into the back through the upper post, lower post and into the 4 x 4 still did not make this anywhere near level. I went to Loews got a 6 ft 4 x 4 and bag of Quikcrete. The way the upper and lower post overlap I had to shape the 4 x 4 to get the 2 parts to still overlap. The magnetic clip to open and close the mailbox was also broken which I used epoxy to put back into place.

It was as straightforward an installation as they come. Be mindful to measure the 4x4 exactly and bury it to the specified depth otherwise the two sections will not join properly. The only annoying part is the bolt inside the mailbox. If at all possible drill a starter hole in the 4x4 (you will need a second pair of hands for this). Otherwise its a snap. For the price it is a good deal.

There are eight long screws with black plastic cover , they fall off the assembly easily. As a result you have screw heads visible on both sides of your mailbox , these screws are subject to rust without the covers ,

It does look a bit cheap up close and the plastic was a bit discolored and scratched but not enough to make me return it. I've seen a few reviews of other plastic products that people spray paint so maybe in a year or so I'll do that. Or replace it. Right now I'm just happy that the mailman doesn't have to open our worn out storm door to use the door mail slot, though there was a convenience to that! It is LARGE yet doesn't look monstrous and I love the size. The closure on the door works very well, after some reviews I was worried. I really have to pull at it to get it open. It was SUPER easy to assemble though the screw you put in at the top, from inside the mailbox, isn't fully in. I'll eventually get back to that....I think. But the recommended socket size was actually wrong. Luckily I have an extensive socket set. I was able to put this together in about an hour, maybe a little more, including the post, with my 2 year old running around me. I used that metal no-dig ground screw- BEST PURCHASE. EVER. I am the handy one and I call the husband for the heavy lifting so I just needed his help when the ground screw got very close to the ground. We just had the front plants redone and there was new mulch. We probably should have moved aside the mulch to get this further in the ground but I'm leaving for this year. If anything I'll unscrew the mailbox and give it a few extra turns....or have the husband do it....and put the mailbox back next year. The beauty of the screw assembly like that is most of these mailboxes mount this way so the post might outlive this mailbox! I ordered both online and just went to my local Home Depot for the post. A 4 foot treated fence post was PERFECT. Took a little encouragement but that meant a snug fit. I'm very happy with the purchase and I would recommend this if you have similar budget issues like we do with our new-to-us house. For this price I'd be looking at an exposed wood post and a cheap metal mailbox that wouldn't make the appearance this does from a distance. I Texted pics to my dad and cousin and they thought it looked great, until I pointed out the flaws. I had no idea how expensive mailboxes got! Maybe later we'll get a better one but I'm sure this will last, and spray paint can always help us get some extra time out of it. Like I said, for the price I'm sure it'll end up being a good deal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice mailbox All plastic, but what isn't today. Well designed. Easy to assemble, but you need a very long extension for your ratchet to install last mounting lag screw inside of box. I used a very long one, plus a short one to reach. If you have a shorty handled ratchet, you might be able to use it without long extension. Box looks very good when installed. Time will tell how the plastic will handle the sunlight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a bad buy! I wasnt real keen on getting a plastic mailbox. I wanted the faux stone and my wife wanted this one so you see how it ended. It was easy to put together and to install. It looks fantastic from afar but up close you see its plastic. Thats the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that its close to perfect.
