Depending on your need, it is either. There are wall pieces that are installed with a drill if it is used at the top of a stairway or a place where you have a wider top opening than the bottom - for example, top of a stairway you usually have the stair stringer on both sides of the staircase that reduce the width of the wall to wall opening. Answer:
Pressure mounted and temporary but sturdy and easy to move to a new location if needed. Had several extensions and a tool but I didn't need the tool to install it as it was pretty easy anyway.

Answer:
It can be either. We have it pressure mounted but it comes with brackets that can be utilized if need be. Although I have not used them as of yet they do not look hard to put in place and we have not ruled them out.

Answer:
It is pressure mounted. They include a wrench for the plastic adjuster nuts. There is also an option to mount it to the wall permanently for a more secure mount that would require a screw driver and possibly small drill bit.

What is the width of the actual gate you open and close to walk through? The one I have now is only 16.5 inches and I would like something much wider.

There was several extensions. I used the shortest one for the doorway to my bedroom but then used the longer one for the deck stairs. Easy to use. Easy to move and Sturdy.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 76 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good Gate works pretty well, but my opening (about 33.5") was a weird size that makes it hate to choose the right extension and doesn't adjust to allow easy opening of the latch. Otherwise, it works pretty well. October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Make sure you read the directions correctly and turn each knob equally and putting it up will be easy! Very sturdy gate that closes by itself after you open it. It's keeping our seventy pound puppy from going down stairs. October 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Returned mounted for this. This should have been my first and only purchase on gates. October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice dog/baby gate This was easy to set up. It was tall enough to keep the big dogs out. The bars were close enough together to keep the little dogs and cats in/out. October 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by purchased to keep dog on deck This gate was easy and fast to install and it looks very nice. It matches our white deck rails and keeps our dog safely on the deck. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Gate We have been using this gate at the top of our stairs for 6 months and it has performed perfectly. If it's used correctly with the awareness that it is a $60 product and not a $400 door it works great. (We do not allow the kids to swing on it.) We are getting a second one for our other stairway. July 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very helpful for our house Having always used the cheap wooden gates, this was a BIG helpful change. Set up was straight forward and the result was a strong sturdy gate with a door in it. Our 2nd toddler was at the age where we still needed to keep her away from the stairs a little longer but it was a pain in the rear to go up or down the stairs with the wooden style gate. This made it so much better, just open and pass through. It stays put as well and I haven't had to adjust it yet or worry about it. Very pleased. July 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gate is ideal for pet containment Bought this gate to help contain a puppy we had just brought home from the Humane Society. This gate comes with a couple different options to extend to a wider opening. The installation is simple and ready to use in minutes. June 25, 2016
