Product Overview

Get your lawn in top green shape with the Sun Joe Dethatcher Joe AJ800E 14 in. electric dethatcher. Powered by a robust 11 Amp motor, the Dethatcher Joe rakes a 14 in. W path in a single pass to get your job done fast. Enhancing its raking ability is AirBoost technology, which maximizes thatch pickup with 24 spring steel tines that stay sharp longer for reliable performance. Use the 5-position depth control knob to tailor the raking depth from 0.12 in. (3 mm below the soil) to 0.35 in. (9 mm above the soil), depending on your lawn's dethatching needs. Thatch is a dense mat of roots, stems and grass clippings that accumulates on lawns over time, blocking the flow of water, oxygen and vital nutrients. It is important to periodically remove thatch in order to keep your lawn green and healthy. While ordinary manual rakes are tiresome to use and not very effective, the electric Dethatcher Joe starts instantly with the push of a button and easily gets the job done without polluting the atmosphere with toxic carbon emissions. No gas, oil or tune-ups make the Sun Joe Dethatcher Joe your green choice for greening your lawn. ETL-approved. 2-year warranty.

I think you could. You probably have to make a couple of passes. Higher setting first time, then lower setting.

Answer:
Yes. Moss should first be treated in the fall with a time-release moss killer fertilizer. If you didn't do that, this unit can still strip the moss but not quite as effectively or easily. You will also be giving your lawn a very close haircut, which is very hard work for it. If you are using this unit for that purpose and you have a large yard, read my detailed review.

Yes, depending on how shallow the grass is cut. If the grass is to long, it will pull out the grass also.

Answer:
Hi Ross,
Yes, the Dethatcher Joe AJ800E will remove moss, as well as thatch, from your grass. It is especially important to dethatch your lawn if you apply a chemical herbicide to kill or weaken moss beforehand.
Hope this helps!

Answer:
Yes, it can. I think the badger is a waste of time. You would be having to stop to much. Just do the yard and then take up.

Answer:
Yes, but understand that the longer it is used without stopping the more likely it will be to hit the automatic shut-down to prevent overheating. Bagging forces you to stop from time to time, so you may never hit the automatic shut-down.

Answer:
I have not seen a reset or amprage reset. But when I first used the machine it died on me. But once it cooled down it started right up. If the area you are dethatching is very high I would not push the machine too hard it is only 11 amps. I also figures out if the machine stops let it cool down and start it on level dry surface, sidewalk, driveway. I have not a problem with is since.

Answer:
The motor does have a thermal switch and will trip if the motor is overworked. It is automatic reset, so depending on how hard you use it it may take a while for the motor to cool down.

Works well. I never set the depth beyond 2, mostly on 1. Can't comment on the airater portion. In my back yard, I had trouble getting grass to grow, but after receiving this I sowed grass seed and lime. Got grass now.

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 47 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It works well, at least as long as your extension reaches where you are working. I had killed my weedy yard and used it to tear up weeds and the ground before seeding. It gave me a nice seed bed. I really overworked the machine since I have half acre yard. It only overheated once. To keep it from overheating I would turn it off after each pass so that while I was turning around the motor could cool. In a few places where thatch was heavy I would make one pass with higher setting and then go over it again with deeper setting. I did not use the bag since I would have had to stop every five feet or so to empty it. It was easier to do the yard and then take up most of the mulch and weeds. I left some as ground cover to protect the seed. October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this little work horse! It is lightweight enough to be easily handled by a woman and really gets the job done on the lawn. I agree with other reviewers, however, that the best idea is to use it without the bag and do pickup afterwards with a rake or your mower (which has a much bigger bag). Just be careful to start by using the lowest settings of 1 or 2 so you don't pull out too much or our lawn. October 27, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good unit, just except to take your time. This unit works pretty well. I found the catch bag to be not worth using though. It was easier to rake after than use the bag. It also needs to cool off after 5-10 minutes of use, so be prepared to take your time. I worked in sections and after raking one section the unit was ready to for the next. If it gets too hot it will quit working until the temperature drops, then works again. Also make sure to cut your grass fairly short before using. It makes things much easier! Also be sure to overlap your passes to ensure you get everything. If it holds up a couple seasons I'll say it was a great deal. I started with a thatch rake. They work great but take so much manual effort on a yard of any real size that this unit pays for itself in time and effort saved. October 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Garbage I have a small front yard about 50ft long and 30ft wide and 5 minutes into It started over heating couldn't do one pass with it after that and that's with it raised all the way up July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Just what the lawn needed Several weeks after dethatching my lawn... it looks GREAT! August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for small areas Great for small areas. Did a great job. Only complaint is the collection bag is difficult to take off and on. July 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Dethatcher The body of this machine is plastic so I don't know how long it will hold up. The attached bag is not real effective at collecting the grass. That being said, it seemed to do what I needed it to but wound up raking up afterwards fue to the ineffective bagger. I wouldn't want to use this in a very big area. July 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good service poor product The product was delivered on time but the product was not good used twice and it broke on my motor did not start up and just died. I called the company and they replaced it the only problem was it took an extra three weeks to get a new one by that time had no use for it. We will see what happens next year. May 31, 2016
