Answer:
Old mulch is OK, but hard compacted clay might be a problem, although you might be pleasantly surprised...!!!

How do I get the handle height mechanism to remain short? It clicks into place at it's extended length, but won't hold when I bring it down to short

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 47 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WAY too weak. Powerless. 2.5 Amps = useless I purchased this online and within 5 minutes of using it, I knew I needed to return it because it is so weak. It needs more power. You barely push down on the ground and it stalls. You can basically cultivate about 1/4" of packed dirt on a pass. If you want to break up 3 or 4" of packed dirt, this isn't going to do it even after 50 passes. It cannot break a root that is hair thin. A tulip would make this thing stall. 2.5 amps didn't really help me so I'll try to put the power of this into terms you can understand. We all understand horsepower, but this would have to be measured in mosquito power. 2.5 amps = 14 mosquito power May 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Little Tool...!!! Great little tool...I've only used it a couple of times, but so far it seems to be doing a good job. Careful removing of small stones that will clog the blades would help...otherwise, it does what it claims...Ideal around garden bushes and getting rid of grass and weeds. Obviously not intended for large garden tilling, although if you had a stone and rock free bed I'll bet it would surprise you. Packaging was good and Instruction manual gets a '10'...!!! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great machine This is the best power gardening tool I have. I am 92 and still maintaining a very large landscaped yard. This cultivator allows me to do the weeding and cultivating much faster and easier. It's size permits me to work easily and safely around flower and shrub beds in a fraction of the time It takes with hand tools. I highly recommend that you add this model to your store stock. I have loaned it to others who have praised it's ability to work as advertised. May 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this little guy! Perfect for what I needed which is to fluff up my flower beds and add soil amendments after winter. Not so powerful that I couldn't handle it being a small little old lady. May 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by love it! I wanted a garden tiller but not a traditional one. I looked online and found one. I went to Home Depot and was disappointed there wasn't any in the store, but I ordered it online from Home Depot. I received the product and love it! It works around plants and flowers real well. I would recommend this to any gardener. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Avoid this product Avoid this product. I tried using this product on a small (3 foot by 10 foot) area of dirt behind my shed in order to prepare it for seeding. The dirt was already moist from the rain we had the day before, so it wasn't that hard or clumpy. I followed their directions by first going backwards then forwards in a straight line with the tool. I was able to make a single row this way successfully. When I went back to the top of the area to begin my next row, as soon as the tines of the tool would just touch the soil, the tines would stop moving. I attempted cleaning any dirt from the tines (not that there was that much from only one pass) but got the same results. The tines would turn fine if I held the tool in the air, but as soon as it touched the ground they would stop instantly. Needless to say, I immediately boxed up the tool and returned it. May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for flower beds or small garden prep. They are on the right track with this little fella, it just needs a more powerful motor. For soft broken ground only! Take it easy with it and rest it often ( it heats up quickly due to lack of power ) and it will get the job done. May 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Aardvark 2.5amp is junk I bought this for light tilling in my raised beds. It spun in the air, but stopped when put to the ground. No power at all. Took it back for a refund. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. I have a bad back and wanted something light and manageable. Would give it zeros other than lightweight April 26, 2016
