Answer:
It is certainly quieter than my 120vac hedge trimmer, but then it is much smaller too. I did not find the noise level objectionable.

Hello Pokie,
The HJ602C has a rated sound power level of 76.4 dB. This is roughly equivalent to a small, handheld vacuum cleaner, but I think you will find it to be very quiet in person!
Hope this helps!

I have no idea but lithium ion batteries last a really long time and by that the time I need to replace the battery I've probably worn out the motor

How well does this work as a shrub trimmer using the longer blade?

I have read of difficulties using the hedge trimmer blade. I've been told that it doesn't cut well and must be held at a precise angle to easily and quickly cut even new hedge growth.

Also, is there anyone who has had one of these units for several years using it each year during the entire summer growing season? I'm trying to determine how well this item holds up given that the gears and internal works are made of plastic and not metal.

Thank you.

Hello HappyCamper,
This unit features a powerful 3.6-volt lithium-ion battery, and an elongated 5 inch shrubber blade to quickly and easily cut any size hedge or shrub. The unit should be held at an angle perpendicular to the shrub to achieve the best cut. The nylon gears are made with a higher-than-normal tensile strength to prevent any snags or branches from damaging them, and the self-sharpening blades are made of high-density carbon steel. This unit has been on the market for almost 5 years and is well received by many home-owners, gardeners, and botanists alike! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent electric grass shears These shears are great for my small project. Very light in weight and the precision is great. Not much assembling, very minimal. July 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Value Great value item for the price. All in one tool for convenience. July 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Hedger Joe - could be better This item works okay as it but it could use a couple of modifications. One, it would be nice if it had a lock switch to keep it running without having to constantly hold the trigger. Two, an extended handle so you can use it while standing erect would be nice. July 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent purchase This is exactly what I needed. It works well around the bark mulch edging. The only drawback is that my hand gets tired holding the trigger in the on position. July 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A new purchase, not used too much yet, but the little I have used it I do think this will meet the need I have for it. It took me some time in trying to change the trimming blade to the shrub cutting blade. Fortunately, I had read in previous reviews one man had a terrible doing this because he was trying to put the blade in upside down. THE YELLOW MARKINGS ON THE BLADE SHOULD NOT BE SEEN WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO PUT THE COVER BACK ON. This helped me a lot. One thing I did learn that would be helpful to new buyers is when you charge the trimmer for the first time, the light goes off when fully charged. Mine was fully charged much quicker than I expected. I am not even sure of the exact time, but three hours after I started charging it, it was fully charged. The problem was I thought it was not charging at all because the red light had gone off indicating it was charged rather than just staying on as I expected it to do. I finally called in and the very helpful and knowledgeable young lady I spoke with explained the situation to me. The light goes off when it is fully charged. Having used the shrub trimmer once now, it does meet my needs as I can no longer easily use the long electrical hedge trimmer I have. This meets the need for which I purchased it. Price certainly seemed acceptable compared to others, Having changed the blades twice now, I find it is getting easier and quicker to do. WHEN YOU DO IT FOR THE FIRST TIME, JUST BE SURE TO LOOK TO SEE HOW IT OPENS FOR THE BOTTOM TO COME OFF. THIS WILL HELP A LOT WHEN TRYING TO PUT IT BACK ON AND SECURING IT. Oh, another thing that confused me is the way the buttons are on the handle. It gave me some trouble at first as I didn't realize it was the buttons on the side which actually gives the trimmer its power to cut. It was again the above mentioned representative who helped me to understand this when I said I couldn't get the trimmer to turn on. I must have missed all this info in the manual, if it is in there, when I read it. Anyway, the buttons on the SIDE are the ones that actually feed it power to turn on and, the one on top then gives the blade the movement needed to cut. You do not need to keep your finger on the "on" button once you get it started. I was trying to position by fingers and thumb to do both, then realized once it was on and I started trimming moving my finger of the side buttons did not cause it to power down. July 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I expected. I have used the hedger blade and it does not have enough power to cut the new growth off a yew. I thought this would be perfect for trimming small shrubs but it does not cut well at all. It will cut them but it takes forever. You have to hold down two buttons at a time which is not easy. The button you have to hold down so you can operate the on switch is not located in a good position. Also when I switched blades I noticed that the gears are all made of plastic, how long they last without breaking is a guess. I will be returning this one and see whatever else is out there. May 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job for which it is intended This clipper unit does a decent job for what it is designed to do. Very light trimming. Don't expect any more from it. June 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Bought this as a replacement for my 15+ year old Craftsman mi-cad powered grass shear/hedge trimmer seeing as it was again time to replace its battery pack and that unit has not been available for a few years. Found it was virtually impossible to keep the Sun-Joe shear running even though I was diligently squeezing the trigger. It constantly stopped and I had to fully release both the trigger and the safety interlock in order to restart. Also, the grass shear blade gnawed rather than cut the grass. I didn't try the hedging blade. May 30, 2016
