I appreciate the answer and looked at the manual but still unclear if you can only vacuum
It isn't pine needles, it is pine cones and sometimes when you pick them up they are very sticky which is why I wonder if they should only be vacuumed and not mulched to save the blade,
Thanks for helping hope these clarifications get me a definitive answer!

Answer:
I would recommend you using your discretion. Your machine should have no issue in mulching but if the needles are overtly sticky my suggestion would be to solely vacuum them up and dispose accordingly.

would like to use for pine cones but afraid the sticky sap might clog it up if you cannot vacuum without shredding

I have included the link to the manual for this unit.
On page 8 and 9 are the details on how you can vacuum debris.
This should be perfectly fine for the pine needles you are inquiring on.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 44 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What a find, wheeled shredder! Have used and worn out many shredders over time, this one is one of the best ideas. Really strong suction, wheels take the strain off your back. The mulcher is one of the best making a larger bag unnecessary. I have already started using it, even shown it to others because of the wheels. I didn't find it hard to assemble. It's a little large, but needed to be to have the wheels, that's not a problem. People have thought it funny I still clear my leaves, reason being I'm a grandmother and I just turned 72yrs the first week in June. Tx native Judy June 20, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Much better options are available This blower failed(electrical short) on the third use. It is HUGE. the wheels help, but still this thing is a monster. The leaf collection bag is very poorly thought out. The side zipper makes it much harder to empty than it needs to be. In short, I returned this and bought the Toro with the metal Impeller. It is AWESOME! I have never looked back. Do yourself a favor and go with the Toro. It is a much better machine, for a better price. Pros Instant switching between blower and vaccum. Cons Heavy, Akward, loud. It is enormous. Poor bag design, hard to empty, inconvenient. Q.C. (electrical short on third use. Plastic Impeller. No variable speed. November 12, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the greatest I purchased the Blower Vac thinking it would be easy to clean our carport floor which constantly collects dried grass clippings from the wind blowing in. I put the blower together without much problem and was happy with the blower function. It blows dry debris into a pile easily, but doesn't have so much force that it makes things "air born". When I attempted to use the vacuum function I was disappointed however, because the suction wasn't enough to pick up the debris. Looking at the unit, I think the suction tube is too large for the motor to be effective. I can't image it being able to shred leaves unless they are totally dry. I returned the blower and continue to use my shop vacuum which has way more power performance. December 10, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good tool The blower is very handy and has good power. It is a little heavy and the bag is a little small. all in all it is a very good value. January 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for blowing pine needles off lawn Easy to assemble, fairly light, and having wheels on the front is very helpful December 30, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by not a good choice the blower was easy to assemble ,but very heavy and lack blowing power and when you are adding a power cord it's result very difficult to operate . good note is a 3in1 machine, very easy to store December 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Blower This is an excellent buy. It works well and is very powerful December 10, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't buy this product. It sounds great not having to move pieces to move from blowing feature to leaf sucking feature. But it blows out air from a smaller tube right underneath the larger sucking tube. So if you don't hold it at the exact angle you're blowing leaves all over instead of picking them up. Also leaves get clogged in the impeller constantly. You have to shut it off every minute or two and let leaves fall free from impeller before you start it again. May 27, 2014
