Answer:
The unit should have no issues shredding magnolia leaves. This unit is built to reduce piles of leaves to a minimal amounts of mulch like material. As long as you are diligent in cleaning the drum consistently to avoid clogging you should have no issues.

I want to be able to throw in a bolted head of lettuce and turn it into compost. The price of this unit is right, the opening looks like it will take the lettuce, only question left is whether or not the strings will do the job. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
No, the head would be too fibrous and the material just too dense since it would be becoming more "stemmy" than "leafy". This device is more a shredder than a mulcher and works better on dry, thin material than moist. Dry, large, individual leaves are its best subject; no stems. It "rips" leaves apart, the drier, the better.

Customer Reviews

Shredder Joe 12 in. 13 Amp 16:1 Reduction Ratio Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 79.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shredder Joe Leaf Mulcher Review Product design for assembly was very simplistic. The shredder has a strong motor utilizing filament line for shredding the leaves and adjustable damper to regulate size of discharged leaf particles. A large hopper allows feeding in leaves for maximum efficiency so the job gets done with minimum effort and time. I thought the purchase price was on the high side, however after using the shredder, I believe that with some longevity the cost will be a great bargain.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Okay but not great It deals with small, dry leaves well enough, but gets tangled up easily and chokes on the (short) stems of English ivy, even dry ones. Would not recommend.

The design is such that it doesn't plug up. I like the feature that allows adjustment of the shredding from fine to coarse. The elastic band on the bottom makes it easy to attach a bag to catch the shredded material. I was extremely impressed with the warrantee. I had used it for a couple days when some object got caught in the chopper mechanism and broke the chopper. I called the Sun Joe company to explore my options for repair. The customer rep (Karina) was very friendly and helpful. She took my information and said they would ship out a new unit within a couple days at no charge. I would merely need to return the damaged unit, using the shipping label provided. I received the new unit and it has worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works too well! It was easy to assemble the mulcher... I didn't even look at the directions until after I was done. I quickly shredded 8-10 bags of leaves into 1-1/2 bags. I did not have to replace the cutting string at all, but there were no small limbs in the leaves, either. The second wave of fallen leaves were damp from rain, but I had shredded the larger pile so quickly that I knew I could wait a day or two for the leaves to dry. You will stop more often to unclog wet leaves, so let them dry first if you can. I was kinda expecting to have to work a little harder.... For now, the mulcher sits in the garage, having done its job quickly and efficiently.

The first shredder I bought conked out before the store warranty ran out--maybe 30 days. The second one lasted 2 seasons but now at the beginning of the 3rd season it has quit running again. I have been careful to keep sticks out and not to overload it. It worked fine for 2 autumns, but as someone else noted, it seems to go through the plastic strings fairly fast. Shredded leaves work great in my compost bin but I can't afford to spend over $100 on a shredder every couple of years.

Some of the parts were a bit snug during assembly and one leg was actually put together backwards. However, the mulcher / shredder worked well on the first try. I was a bit surprised at the amount of wear on the strings even though they are replaceable and two dozen extra come with the unit. When I tried to register my unit, I found the manufacturer's website awkward and difficult to use; I ended up skipping registration.
