This was my first time installing radiant heating wire. I am a woman in my 40's who had never done this type of flooring before, so I was very nervous about nicking the wire at certain times. I chose the free wire over the mats because you have more options of putting the wire in certain places, and going around things (see pic). All I can say is please read and follow the directions, and if you have any questions or do not understand any part of the directions, CALL them. I have to say I had excellent customer service on the phone and they walked me through every question or concern I had. There was no wait time, and it will stop you from second guessing yourself later.
Important things when installing: Make sure the wire is tacked down, either with the glue gun or with the straps that they give you. The glue gun is great when you have to go around things, or if some of the wire loosened up while strapping it down, so make sure you have one! Make sure that the wire is taut. I poured self leveling over the wire when I finished strapping it down and a couple of the wires must have loosened up in two places, and I saw them very close to the top. Made me nervous that when I tiled over them, I thought I might nick the wire, but luckily all was good. Just beware, and TAKE YOUR TIME! ALSO, when the box says 100 sq. ft., or 80 sq. ft. they mean it. Not an inch more!! I know it looks like a lot when you start, and even looks like a lot 1/2 way through but they do not give you more, and it goes real fast. When it looked like I had a lot 1/2 way through, I stopped strapping every three inches and started strapping 2 1/2, and I had to redo it so that I had enough. This is just a heads up.
Do not skip on the loudmouth. I learned a lot about electric during this project, and the loud mouth is a must at all stages especially before pouring the self leveler.
Order an extra floor sensor with your thermostat. (see pic) The one picture shows two black sensor wires. Always have a back up. They are only 10 bucks, but better than tearing up a floor to get a new one in.
Read these reviews and others on-line. There are a lot of helpful suggestions for you. Oh, and take plenty of pictures of all of your work, and where the wire and sensors are before pouring the self leveler.
Benefits. I've never walked on heated floors before so I wasn't too impressed when I first turned them on. I thought, wow, all of this just so that I can walk around in my bare feet? What I didn't expect was that these warm floors were going to warm the entire room, and take that chill out of the air. I didn't have to hear my big whole house furnace kick on just so that I could get one room warm, in fact it barely kicks on because the heat just rises to the upstairs. I don't know how I lived without these! Now, I can say they were definitely worth it. I ended up doing the entire 1st floor instead of just a bedroom., I put three separate zones in, and intend to do the upstairs bathrooms next year.
Great product, excellent customer service! PICTURES ON MY 80 SQ WIRE REVIEW

It is a little bit of a math exercise to make sure you have the layout correct but once this is done, laying out the wire was straight forward. Well worth the savings over buying the mats.
