Product Overview

At just under 4 ft. high, this resin horizontal storage shed from Suncast has a profile low enough to nestle below most common fence lines yet it's tall enough to accommodate most trash cans and recycling bins. The 3-door design lets you reach all corners of the deck box, while the lift-up lid has a hands-free peg that keeps it raised when you need an extra hand. All three doors close tightly together and can be easily secured by affixing a separately-sold padlock. This horizontal shed is molded with interior grooves that allow you to situate one built-from-scratch wood shelf (not included) for extra storage organization.

  • Exterior dimensions: 53 in. W x 32-1/2 in. D x 45-1/2 in. H
  • Interior dimensions: 49 in. W x 28-1/4 in. D x 42-3/4 in. H (rear height, sloped roof)
  • Great for storing smaller garbage cans, garden supplies, pool and patio items and more
  • Padlock ready, 3-door locking system (lock not included)
  • Low profile design is ideal for placement on the side of a house, patio or under a fence line
  • Outfitted with notched grooves for addition of 1 wood shelf (lumber not included)
  • Reinforced floor for heavier items
  • Low maintenance, durable double-wall resin construction
  • Fast, secure easy bolt assembly

I can't answer that without knowing more about your mower. I have a 21-inch self propelled mower and the mower deck would fit, but the handle would not collapse (lean forward) enough to allow the lid to close.

The inside dimensions are 28" deep x 49" wide x 40" high, which comes out to 31.75 cubic feet. Note that the lid does increase a little in height from front to back, so I used the minimum height of 40" at the front in this answer.

No, it cannot be painted. Mine is on a dirt base, but I know of someone who has one on grass. Concrete is not necessary as long as surface is level.

I don't believe standard paint would adhere well at all to the plastic material from which the shed is made. It is smooth and lacks "tooth" necessary for paint to adhere. I wouldn't recommend painting this shed at all. The bottom of the shed is formed into a floor platform and should be able to rest securely on any level (this is critical), solid base. If it is to rest on bare soil, I would recommend that the soil be highly compacted with adequate drainage because the shed base is only 1" or so thick and it wouldn't take much water to "invade" it. I installed a much larger shed of the same type of construction on compacted road base, a type of gravel, and it really works well (elevated above grade, level, stable, and dry). If you do use gravel, I would recommend making a 2" x 4" frame of treated lumber six inches or so larger than each horizontal dimension (L x W) and anchor it to the soil by drilling 3/8" holes in it every 18" or so and anchoring it by driving 12" long by 3/8" diameter pieces of rebar into the holes flush with the frame to provide stability. Good luck. Read Less

Thank you for your questions, Ken. Some manufacturers state their paint can be used on plastic. These are not appropriate for Suncast products.
As with all Suncast sheds, the Suncast horizontal shed model BMS3400 requires a level and sturdy foundation. Site preparation instructions are included in the assembly manual beginning on page 11. You will want to be sure that the ground surface is level before assembling the shed.
Placing the shed directly onto dirt is not recommended. The ground could settle, causing distortion and eventually damaging the shed. If you forgo a constructed foundation, even using a layer of gravel over dirt would settle and shift. A foundation constructed of exterior grade lumber or a concrete slab is highly recommended.
If you go with a concrete slab, you may even need a vapor barrier placed on top of a concrete slab and under the floor of the shed to prevent condensation inside the shed. Since different regions may have different vapor barrier needs, see your local hardware or home supply store for advice on which type is best suited for your application.
We appreciate your concerns, Ken, and thank you for your interest in Suncast products.

I have only owned this unit for a month, but in that time we have had a few significant rainstorms. No evidence of rain getting inside. However, mine is located against the side of our house, so it doesn't necessarily get pounded on all sides during a rain event. Seems fairly rain-repellent to me.

It is designed to be rain proof. You may want to put a lock in the latch just in case of a strong wind that could lift the top, although it would have to be a very strong wind.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 86 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very Nice Resin Product I had reviewed countless varieties of storage units for my refuse cans and settled on this based on combination of appearance, cost, and (hopefully) long-term resiliency. That said, it is a resin product, so long-term performance to sun, heat and weather is always a consideration. It has plenty of room for my two refuse cans. Top and doors are easy to open, I assembled without any assistance, but I could see where some people would find it faster and easier to have another pair of hands. Be sure to use a rubber mallet during assembly to ensure that the panels are properly seated into other pieces. Also, I constructed the wooden base as recommended. It provided for a secure and level platform - - I would suggest considering the extra effort. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Winter bird food storage As a retired carpenter this replaces one that was built ,years ago, of wood. I like it ! It went together okay--being a first time job. If I were to buy another, it will be much easier to put together--knowing & learned how. Yes, we did "need 2 people", as the instructions suggested. I liked the hinges- cleverly designed. I like that it has front doors that open, beside the roof. It makes it easier to get items in the storage shed. It has an exclusive , rich-looking design compared to the old wood shed. It is quality. I liked the "shingled" roof. October 11, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by A little flimsy It serves its purpose but is a real pain in the butt to close because the walls are a bit flimsy and tend to move easily. The locking mechanism is an absolute joke and if the doors aren't lined up well then the "locking mechanism" pops off. I should have spent more and gotten a better product that has higher quality. September 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Useful shed The assembly was not as easy as some others and it seems a bit flimsy but for the price this is a good shed. September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shed No issues. Process was easy will do it again. Thank you September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shed Purchase Easy to assemble. Instructions called for two people, but easily assembled by myself. Seems solid. Plan on purchasing another in the near future. September 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ideal deck shed This is a light duty shed. As such it is ideal for our purpose, storing chairs on a deck. But it would not be appropriate standing alone on top of a stormy hill. The fit is excellent and the instructions are clear, so assembly is straight-forward and easy. Very pleased with this product. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Suncast horizontal shed Nice looking storage shed and easy to open and close. Putting it together took more time then we thought and extra manpower. It was worth it. August 9, 2016
