Answer:
Not cardboard. It is made of the same plastic resin as the rest of the box only slightly harder.
As to why the bottom fell out - I can only guess that the box was not properly assembled (which is hard to get wrong as it snaps together). What most likely happened was that the box was filled with stuff and they tried picking the box up to move it.

the bottom is the same material as the rest; not cardboard. Just follow the instructions if you install it the wrong way, it will fall out, but installed correctly, works fine.

The floor of the chest is made of the same material as the sides and top, resin. I have items stacked inside the chest and the floor is solidly in place. All parts of the chest assemble with stability. Just remember it's light weight not like wood. Of course that's part of its appeal to me. The chest is easy to move, relocate and clean with a hose.

Answer:
It is all plastic, no cardboard. The bottom probably fell out as it does not really lock in that securely and does not withstand a lot of weight. Mine warped and lost it's shape as I keep in partly in the sun.

No, the bottom is made of the same resin material the entire chest is made from. I wouldn't know why it would fall out unless it wasn't properly installed because I had no issue with putting it in place and it not staying there. It was snug once in place properly.

Yes. I just wrote a review about this....it's a great storage box but the wind gets under the lid and opens it. We are in a very windy area. My husband tucked some foam insulation under the edge of the lid so the wind wouldn't get under it and also gives it a bit more weight. So far it's been working. I use this box on our porch to receive packages and it works very well for that purpose.

Funny you should ask, yes just yesterday. The storage chest actually moved a couple of inches, but I had no weight inside yet..........I think once I have somethings in it that would weigh it down it won't move......... I turned the chest around so the wind wouldn't catch it, it was fine then.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So much storage! Looks great too. We purchased this for our patio as we have a hot tub in the winter, and a pool in the summer, so we need lots of storage. Even with hot tub chemicals, filters, pool filters, and miscellaneous items, we cannot fill it up! We will be shopping for a pad to put on the top, so it is a bit more comfortable to sit on, but we love it! August 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk Still can't get it together it's in a pile Would never buy this product again it didn't come with instructions August 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Keep expectations real. Quick and easy to assemble. Added a couple of shelves and all the outdoor gardening gear fits with room left over. I sat on it and it didn't break - 280#s. Are there any CONs? Yes. Within a month (little direct sun), the lid had warped so that the right and left edges are no longer flush to the sides. It is visually noticeable, but functionally not a problem as wind does not lift the lid and rain hasn't gotten inside. Just remember it is made of heavy duty plastic material, not wood! Keep your expectations real and you won't be disappointed. June 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good quality deck box, poorly designed latch for lid This is our umpteenth Suncast product purchase spread over many years (I've lost count). Suncast products are sturdy and easy to assemble. A problem with this particular deck box is that the latch design for keeping the lid closed is faulty. The lid does not close securely, and it blew open during a windy day. We have since fixed the problem with velcro. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect! Lightweight and easy to assemble! Perfect for storing chlorine buckets in...just why I needed it. Great product and blends in with the landscaping; so it is not an eyesore. May 18, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great box except... This is a great box. Stays dry inside and goes together easily. We bought it to accept packages on our porch when we're not at home so they're not laying out in the open and protected from the elements. It's doing a great job. The only problem is that there's no clasp to keep it closed. We live in a very windy area and the wind opens and closes the lid. My husband tucked some foam insulation up inside the edges of the lid so the wind can't get under it and also to give it a little more weight. So far this is working well. December 11, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Urban Storage I had been dreading getting storage for the front deck of our tiny urban condo - dreading trying to find the right size piece that could double as seat in a style that would compliment the industrial look of our condo association. At first, I was loathe to look at anything that remotely resembled something that could be found on an urban backyard pool deck, but, with spring fast approaching and our gardening supplies overflowing the utterly unsuitable wooden trunk we had, I decided to check HomeDepot.com for anything that could accommodate our needs. Wow - what a surprise I got! Fits perfectly, with just enough storage for all our supplies, and the light-weight lid fits tightly enough to keep everything dry and secure in the many snowstorms we've had as late. Plus, not only does it compliment our surroundings, but it's strong enough so that both my husband and I can sit comfortably on it, adding extra entertaining space where we most need it. March 5, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Serves the purpose It's a bit light weight, but it serves the purpose for my outdoor furniture coverings. The top does not fasten down tight...Will see if it holds up under the heavy winds. October 13, 2015
