Answer:
I in fact didn't anchor it....it sits on my cement patio....free standing., it's about 800 pounds of cedar and even with winds here in Reno, nv. around 35 to 40 miles an hour, at times, it hasen't budged. I'm sure that you could bolt in down with no problem to a wood deck, or attach it to your house.

There are many high quality wood oils available in hardware and home stores. Select high quality oil and follow manufacturer's instructions. A polyurethane finish can also be used. Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor delivery, Poor quality wood, average instructions After doing research for weeks we purchased this pergola because the size was the closet to what we were wanting and it was at a reasonable price. We paid for home delivery and was very glad that we did. The box was over 400 pounds and over 100 inches long. The delivery company subcontracted the delivery to a local agent, after multiple calls I was finally able to schedule delivery for 4 days after it arrived in town. I was told it would be delivered at 12 pm, it was delivered at 7:30 pm, by one guy who would never have gotten it off the truck without my husbands assistance. The pergola came in many pieces, the list of parts for the 8x10 has an error and gives the number of pieces for an 10 x12 on two sets of pieces which caused confusion but I decided to wing it when I noticed that the number of parts listed were the same for both sized and knew that it couldn't be correct. We took two days to put the pergola together. Most of the pieces were warped in some manner so very few pieces went together as intended. The top stringers are composed of two strips of wood, one short, one long. The precut notch on the long piece that is intended to butt up against the short piece was cut too short so we have gaps up to 1/2 inch between the pieces. The warped wood and issues with the precut notches is why I've rated the quality as fair and the value as average. It looks good from a distance, hopefully no one but my husband and I will notice all the gaps in the stringers. We plan on staining and sealing the wood now that it's put together, there are lots of crack in the wood and without sealing the wood, it won't last long. May 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by We couldn't be happier! We were a little unsure when we saw the box it came it...but once it was all put together, we couldn't be happier. We already had metal post-straps in our concrete pad, so we appreciated that the sizing was a bit flexible. My husband treated all the wood (with a stain/water-sealant combo) prior to assembly...it turned out beautifully and we have really been enjoying it! I have told many people about it and our neighbors are all impressed. One negative is the spacing between the slats doesn't provide much shade. However, we bought a tan screen material at Home Depot (for $32) and stapled it over the top. Looks and works great!! June 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! MY 10X12 Let me say I read practically all the reviews before purchasing. The material is very good quality, when the package arrived (6 boxes) 3 of the boxes were pretty beaten up but no damage to the wood. The instructions were great and very clear. My husband and I did this project together and took our time with it. Purchased in March stained over 2 wks every piece, assembled the post facings and installed stone tile as a design accent (used liguid nail) instead of mortor and let sit for several weeks. The rest of the assembly took about 3-4hrs. Make sure the Arched rafters (when assembled seperately) line up the same for each or your straight rafters will be off and difficult to fit in the notches. It looks fantastic at night with the landscape lights...WE ARE EXTREMELY PLEASED! YEAH! June 7, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful upgrade to our home Great quality product. Beautifully designed. Conforms as an ideal solution for additonal ambiance on existing deck. Functions as a charming and appealing outdoor room with potential of extra shade when needed. June 30, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Just What We Were Looking For We've looked for some time for cedar pergolas. This was a perfect size for us. Although a little pricey, it has met our needs. We had to call Suncast to get the instructions, but they promptly emailed them. Assembly was not difficult, but sorting the pieces took some time since they were not in separate boxes like the instructions said they would be. One trim piece was so crooked we had to call for a replacement, but it has come in. It was nice to call a company and talk to a real person without going through a menu. We're looking forward to many hours under our new pergola. July 9, 2011
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by The product is not what I expected I would not have bought the product if I has seen it. They shipped the parts in a undersized container so they had to cut the main support stringers and the cross members. The legs are made of two 2X4's with short fillers, I had thought they would be solid. I had trouble with a lot off the parts wrapping, some of those they replaced but when we start to put the unit together it was difficult do with out having special tools. The average person would not be able to do it. I'll give them a 5 out of 10 rating for effort but I don't feel like I got my moneys worth. September 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product! After going through various canopies for our patio, I decided on ordering this pergola kit. I got the kit delivered to me within 1.5 weeks of ordering which was a lot sooner than I expected. It took a friend and myself about 5 hours to complete. All of the pieces were included and pre-cut and drilled just right. We had a huge storm about 2 days after putting this pergola up that had some very strong winds...the pergola never budged an inch!! As a previous reviewer posted, you can adjust the size dimension on this but I have a 10x12 patio so I wanted the full size. I need to stain it soon but it's been everything we hoped it would be. Our neighbors really like it and have asked questions about ordering. Thank you Home Depot! August 11, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well worth the wait and the work! Although is was about a month before we received this, it was worth the wait. Putting it together was time consuming (about 4 hours); my hubby is very mechanical/carpentry oriented, so it wasn't too bad. Having all the wood pre-cut and all the notches where you need them is such a time saver! Another nice thing is that you can adjust the length to make this shorter if you need it; we have it at an 8x8' by just pulling in the ends a bit! You are not committed to the 8x10' size! This is a beautiful addition to our yard. . . . now to stain it! May 1, 2010
