Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Some TLC makes this worth it This was something we wanted to keep our patio "stuff" in, and mostly out of sight. We also thought that the seat would be pretty nice. Preassembly In addition to the box I left the Depot with a quart of BEHR Premium Natural Tone Cedar Premium Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Finish and a house brand paint brush. I already had some 80 grit sandpaper at might want to pick some up while at the store. Sanding helped to get some of the "factory marks" and splinters out of the wood. I wouldn't say this is a required step, but the stain will soak in better this way and it’s noticeable at the end. So once I got everything home and unboxed it was time to sand. I only sanded the outside. After sanding make sure to clear away the dust with compressed air or other method. I put three coats on the outside and one on the inside. The wait time between coats was about one hour. The inside coat may protect it a little, but for me it completes the look mostly. I would wait a few extra hours before assembly since handling the pieces may mess up the finished lines. Yes, there are lines, always with the grain people. Assembly Though not required I would recommend using your electric drill if you have one…and even better if you have a deep socket attachment. Take your time on this…there are pre-drilled holes in both pieces to guide screws. Getting the box together took some time, but it was quite sturdy at the end. Next attaching the resin pieces was a bit of a challenge. You might have to break out your rubber mallet a few times…I did. Toward the end of the build you may need a helper since the lid is a bit bulky to hold onto and install at the same time. After that it’s cake. One plus that I didn’t know when I bought this…it has shocks so that when you open it up it will stay open at about 60 degrees or so. 4 stars because of assembly time. Other than that I'm pleased with price/quality. May 21, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great to sit on and I like the gas struts that help open the lid. Out of all the storage containers this one was rated the best. I stained the cedar a solid color to match the vinyl windows, it really looks great. The assembly will take awhile but be patient and you will be statisfied with the end result. Since the cedar is soft you have to be careful not to overtighten your screws otherwise you may strip your threads that the wood screw is making in the cedar, make sure the screws are snug just don't Gorilla tighten them. Some of the pre drilled holes in the wood were not in line with the holes in the base and top so you may have to elongate the hole in the frames so the screw can line up with the hole in the wood. The cedar tongue and grove planks are preassembled with horizontal pine braces. You can easily tighten your wood screws into the pine braces but the four corners of your top lid and bottom base are anchored into cedar, go easy when tightening your corners, the cedar isn't as strong as the pine. After staining it took about 3 or 4 hours to assemble. I did not use power tools for fear of stripping my wood threads. Very happy with the product, will see in time how it holds up. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hybrid Deck Box, If It Had Wheels It Would Drive! This box is amazing. The hinges and gas loaded openers make opening and closing the lid a cinch for even the smallest users. I use one for pool toys and the other for gardening equipment. The wood design is so versatile that I was able to paint the outside to match the durability and style of the hybrid plastic bottom and top. This Bench is going to be in my family for years to come. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Went together easy and looks great No problems with assembly at all, except some of the screws were of low quality as with many things these days. We opted to stain the cedar instead of letting it weather, so we tried the stain we were thinking of using on the deck. We used a water and UV resistant deck stain and I think it turned out very well. 99 gallons is a big box, its a little bigger than our love seat, so make sure ya have the room for it.:) June 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the look and hybrid material design Just finished assembling this deck box. I took the suggestion of WRUFF in using a red cedar look stain/urethane protection. I used Minwax PolyShades Natural Cherry Satin which stains and protects. I used a fine sandpaper on all the wooden parts before applying any stain. I stained the wood (2 coats) before assembling the box which made the finished product much neater with no chance of getting stain where you don't want it. I left the inside unstained to give it the beautiful cedar smell which should also limit and bugs etc. damaging my patio cushions. The parts fit together extremely well with all the holes matching up very well too. Initial impressions are that it there is little to no chance even small insects can get inside the box - there really are no cracks or poorly fitting joints. The plastic base, top and top ring give the protection where it's needed with the cedar providing the good looks. I'm confident that this box will last well and due to the additional protection from the stain should still look great for years to come. I'd definitely recommend this deck box. September 21, 2013
