Customer Questions & Answers

I am looking for a variable speed control switch to operate a 3600 rpm car buffer, will this one carry the load, if not, which one will?

Asked by: Lefty
It is rated for two and a half amps. Check the plate on your buffer and make sure that it will work. Your question suggests you may be thinking of something else. This is a wall mounted controller, and it is normally hard-wired to one device. Using it with a buffer is a bit unusual, but it would probably work.

The reason I cannot recommend it is that the information provided is insufficient. A variable speed control for a fan will not work with all types of fan motors. For it to work, the fan must have either a permanent split capacitor motor or a shaded pole motor. If it is a split phase motor, the motor may be damaged. Also, some variable speed controls alter the AC wave form in such a way that the motor may buzz. That is unlikely to cause damage, but the noise may be annoying. Unfortunately, the catalog specifications for variable speed controllers often provide insufficient information to determine whether they will cause a motor to buzz. Of course that information should be provided. There are stepped fan speed controls that will not cause motors to buzz. They should function OK with fans which have either a permanent split capacitor motor or a shaded pole motor. They are available with from two to five speeds, i.e., high low, high medium low, etc.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Buy This Maybe this works with some fans, but this does not work with any suncourt fans. I read online that people were burning out their normal fans with this but the instructions for my inline duct fan said this was compatable so I dismissed the reviews. My mistake; After a day or two, the fan slowed down a lot. Even when the dial was on max it was less then half the power it was before. I had to return this product and exchange the fan I had been using a year for a new one, luckily I saved my original box. I dont know why this product is sold, google it for more reviews.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work with Suncourt Fans As others have experienced, this does not do what Suncourt says. I saw one positive review, so I thought I would try it on my RDN04‑3. Just made the motor hum/ buzz, but didn't change the speed (maybe slightly). HD was great and took the return no questions. I have read that using a variac should work (3x cost), so I will try that next. If that fails, then I will have to find a different fan. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Finally, a speed controller that DOES work with these fans It remains a mystery as to why a speed controller made by Suncourt doesn't work with their own fans, but I found a controller that does work just fine, a Leviton IllumaTech Quite Step. It's made for ceiling fans, but I thought if it works with AC motors, it's worth a shot. I still need to see how it performs over the next several months, make sure it doesn't put any additional strain on the motor, but so far it works exactly like I'd hoped. I have the Suncourt 4" duct fan, and it puts out some serious air normally and I needed to reduce it a bit, and this switch allows me 4 speed control settings. Hope this helps others.
