Product Overview

The Sunforce 30 Amp Digital Charge Controller is the ideal solution for preventing overcharging of your 12-Volt batteries and protecting solar panels. It contains a digital display that provides either the charging current or the battery voltage on the LCD digital meter. A charge controller is an essential part of nearly all power systems that charge batteries. Its purpose is to keep your batteries properly fed and safe for the long-term. The basic functions of this controller are to block reverse current and protect against battery overcharge, battery discharge, electrical overload, and/or display battery status and the flow of power.

  • Protects battery from overcharge and discharge
  • For use with 12-Volt solar panels and batteries only
  • Handles up to 450-Watt of solar power
  • Handles up to 30 Amp of array current
  • Maintains 12V batteries in a fully charged state
  • Digital display provides charging current and battery voltage on LCD digital meter for added convenience
  • Maintenance free protection of solar panels and batteries

Does this charge controller use a positive or a negative common?

Does this charge controller use a positive or a negative common?
Asked by: Sonicwave
I bought a charge controller, of a different brand. It has a positive common. all the positive terminals, solar, batteries, load, are all connected together inside the unit. The solar, batteries, and load is controlled by the negative. I built my solar array and batteries with common negative ground, using earth ground as negative, and large gauge wire as positive. Why would anybody build an electronic device with a positive common? The controller is totally useless to me, unless I re-wire my system, or find a controller that’s built with common negative, as most d.c. electronics are. So that's my question. Is this Sunforce controller positive or negative common?

Very little, only enough to give you the battery readings and whether your panels are charging.

Can I splice the supply wires of two 100 watt (12v) solar panels together and then hook them up to this charge controller

I have two 100 watt panels. I want to know if I can splice the output wires together and then connect to the charge controller or should I get a connection hub
Asked by: TheBear
Yes, I have three panels hook to my system. You can hook up to 30 amps of charging and my three panels have only got up to 6 amps charging.

I purchased the Sunforce 30 Amp Digital Charge Controller from Home Depot along with two Grape 180 watt solar panels in parallel which could produce 15 amps each at 12 volts. Two 6 volt 220 amp-hour golf car batteries are being charged to operate a MinnKota 55 pound thrust trolling motor on a pontoon boat in Northern Wisconsin. Normally I would oversize the controller for the panels but in this case the panels are not in the ideal sun exposure position to reach full panel potential. The cost of the panels, wires, and controller were substantially less than running electrical service to an outlet at the dock and you can't safely lift and carry heavy golf cart batteries for charging at the cabin. So this was for me the lowest cost solution and environmentally the right choice. The system works as advertised as I tested it this spring before taking it to the cabin.

I use this controller on my solar panels (3) and a wind turbin for my off grid system at a hunting cabin a mile from the nearest electric. It makes sure my batteries do not over charge and also tells me the condition of the charge in the batteries. I have not had a problem with this controller and would recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like the voltage/amperage reading selection feature. I don't have to add extra amp/voltage meter. It has been performing great connected to my existing solar panels. I will be adding more solar panels soon, to take full advantage of the controller's capabilities.
