A charge controller is an essential part of nearly all power systems that charge batteries. Its purpose is to keep your batteries properly fed and safe for the long-term. The basic functions of this controller are to block reverse current and protect against battery overcharge, battery discharge, electrical overload, and/or display battery status and the flow of power.

  • Protects battery from overcharge and discharge
  • For use with 12-Volt solar panels and batteries only
  • Handles up to 450-Watt of solar power
  • Handles up to 30 Amp of array current
  • Maintains 12V batteries in a fully charged state
  • Digital display provides charging current and battery voltage on LCD digital meter for added convenience
  • Maintenance free protection of solar panels and batteries

Answer:
The 30 Amp controller is designed only for 12V solar panels. 255 Watt panels are usually 24V, 36V and higher; as such they require controllers of the same voltage rating.
Please verify the nominal and maximum power voltage ratings of your panels for more information.

What kind of charge controller I need and if my inverter is big enough? Do I need anything else also to keep safe? And should we hook the batteries up in series instead of parallel. They were boiling.

Answer:
The 30 Amp controller is designed specifically for 12V systems. While your batteries may be 12V, a solar panel of tat size is likely to have a 24V or higher voltage output. In general, there are no 12V panels above 200 Watts of output. We would recommend finding a controller rated for your panels voltage and capable of stepping down to 12V in order to charge your batteries.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great deal ! Great product ! It worked as advertised. easy to install. I would buy another one if I needed it April 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by An excellent choice. Since this was replacing a controller that had stopped working, the installation was simple. And the digital readout is a bonus that we did not have on the old controller. July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I like the voltage/amperage reading selection feature. I don't have to add extra amp/voltage meter. It has been performing great connected to my existing solar panels. I will be adding more solar panels soon, to take full advantage of the controller's capabilities. October 29, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good device at this price range It will be cheaper for the same thing "Coleman 30-Amp Digital Charge Controller". Mine seems like cannot charge beyond 13.0v. To my knowledge, the unit should stop charging your battery roughly around 13.4v; will keep monitoring to see if this is the case... October 24, 2012
