Answer:
Lou,
Tools can be used. We have seen people use toothpicks, popsicle sticks, and even putty trowels. Others have just dispensed the contents of the tube straight onto the damaged area. For a scratch, a toothpick is helpful.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use, looks fine. This white porcelain repair is easy to apply and so far seems durable. I repaired two good size chips in the bath tub. First I cleaned it very thoroughly then let it dry overnight. followed instructions and puncture the seal in the tube with the handy point built into the cap. Learned that it is important to reapply the cap and shake the tube after puncturing it because the contents have separated while sitting in my tool box. The fluid comes out rather thin and watery, so apply carefully. I applied in two thin applications. You may notice from the photo that the liquid is pure white and the tub is not quite so white. Still, white is much better than black steel showing through the chips. August 20, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Not bad but not great So I have mixed emotions when it comes to this product. Yes, on one hand it is a great adhesive for porcelain, if you have a chipped flower pot that you'd like to mend or perhaps the edge of a sink. It dries in only 10 minutes and can be reapplied to add additional strength after 24 hours. It cleans easily with a dry rag when wet, or with a little acetone when dry. However, for my purposes I was expecting a little something different. I installed a new toilet in my master bath earlier this year and realized upon unboxing it that there was a small crack along the bottom of the base of the bowl. It's merely cosmetic, but still I was hoping to improve it's appearance some. I applied the product and lo and behold it filled the crack pretty well although it dries with a yellowish film and does little to improve the appearance at all. For something of this nature or if you're simply concerned with maintaining a certain aesthetic appeal, be mindful that this product does it's job, but does not "look" the part when it comes to solid white porcelain. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quick and simple solution to repair your ceramic stuff It was quick and easy fix for the chip on our bathtub. I applied the glue straight out of the tube on the chip and then let it dry overnight. It takes longer then the instructions to dry but does a great job after it has dried. Overall a good product. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I hoped for. I had inherited some chips in a bathtub in the house I bought. I didn't expect miracles, as I have used similar products in years past. I first discovered that this product separates in the tube, so be sure to shake it well before using. After remixing, it was still very thin, which worked fine cosmetically, but it did not fill the chip, requiring layering. Whites never match perfectly, so it was still visible, but better looking than the chips. The tub is in a guest bathroom and has had little use, but it has held up so far. December 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As Good As Older Versions I used to get a five buck tub repair kit from here that contained 2 bottles, a mixing tray, and a brush. I was unhappy they don't carry that anymore, but found the results of this newer version to be the same.. Good. December 14, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for small chips This is a good product for small chips, I tried to do a very large scrape on a dryer. It looked messy, because I am not a qualified repair person of porcelain. I made a mess of the repair and ended up cleaning it off the dryer. I did a small chip in the bathtub and it turned out pretty good. We just had our tub reserficed so the brite white matched perfectly. If I had a tub that was 40 or 50 years old, it might have looded different. It is easy to use and easy to clean off. Follow the directions and you should be ok. Do not attempt to do a large area, leave that to the professionals. Trust me. LOL July 21, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by what a mess! I used this to glue on a chip that came off of my white clothes dryer and the crack below it. The biggest issue that i have with this product is that it is a small tube but not designed for its use. since the repair most likely requires a small line of this product it should have a tip at its end and it does not. at one point i went to wipe away the excess but the paint element dries quicker than the glue element of the product so the chip of the dryer that i was fixing fell off and onto the floor and sprayed white paint everywhere. So when you are about to use this [product make sure you: 1) wear gloves 2) ventilate the area 3) wear a disposable mask and 4) have a wet cloth with some quick paint remover handy. Also it doesn't vanish so you will see this liquid. However, it does look a little better than looking at the crack. August 3, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bright white finish - looks good This product was easy to use for repairing a chipped spot on a steel tub. The viscosity was just right for easy application that did not sag or run on a vertical surface. (If a thicker coating were needed to fill a deep chip, it would likely take multiple applications, as a thicker layer could sag or run a bit.) The dried finish was truly white - actually a bit whiter than our tub, but still a reasonable match. It sure beats replacing the tub! July 5, 2014
