Answer:
Hi there,
It does not have an on/off float switch. Sump pumps come with a switch, utility pumps do not. You can add one very easily by getting a universal tethered float switch with a piggy back plug. These are available at most Home Depots for around $20.00-$25.00

Does this use the garden hose to drain from the pump?

I'm in California kind of in shock I'm going to have to buy a pump, with EL Nino and 33 inches of rain on the way have no choice. When it rains very hard my backyard my drain gets backed up because the street drains water is flowing so fast can't keep up it won't let my backyard patio drain water out. So I get I'm stuck with standing water and it almost got in the house through the sliding glass door base. But I don't know if you use the hose because I need to throw it out to the driveway probably 15 feet? So that would be a garden hose?

Answer:
yes you screw on a garden hose for discharge. Pump will not shut itself off. If you are pumping horizontally or downhill you could pump a long ways. It says it will pump up vertically 25 feet so It certainly would have no problem pumping much further if hose was level, downhill or even slightly uphill for a long distance.

Answer:
The pump comes with a 3/4" garden hose threaded adapter so it can be attached to a 3/4" garden hose. You can remove the hose adapter which will leave the 1-1/4" male pipe threads on the pump to attach to a pipe.

Answer:
Hi Linny,
No. A utility pump does not have an on/off switch other than plugging it in and out. A sump pump will have a float switch but will need the pump to be 4+ inches deep in water or more depending on the switch type.
Thanks

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 40 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I bought this pump for a water feature. I set in in a 169 gallon, galvanized, oval cattle water trough. The water is pumped up to my gutter through a garden hose remnant and then flows to downspout which I replaced with 3 inch pvc pipe which I attached horizontally to house. The water shoots out end of pvc into trough and when pump is plugged in it simply circulates. I think it's cool. I sit in garage just a few feet from trough and enjoy the sound and looks of the flowing water. October 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job. Reasonable price. I purchased this online since the pumps they carried in stores were at much higher prices. This pump did the job well. I used it to drain an inground pool. Appropriate power and easy to use. Pleased with this product. Does good work and a good value. September 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by this pump is worh the money I got this pump to empty my swimming pool, and it did a very good job.I would recommend this pump, seems to work very well and quick.. September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 1/3 HP Submersible Thermoplastic Utility Pump The pump was easy to use and to attach a garden hose for a discharge. It pumped the water down to advertised level. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked as advertised! I drained my 13000 gallon pool in less that 8 hours. Beware of a hose they try pairing up with this purchase as it did not work at all and I had to go buy a different one. October 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Back to pumping This pump was ordered to replace a pool drain pump that had burned out. Had to visit a store to get a reverse-threaded connector for my existing hose - another $8 to spend. Stability of the bottom of the pump was not ideal, tended to tip over. Still, for the price, it pumped well, and is a decent bargain. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Purchase This pump made the job of partially draining an in-ground swimming pool very easy. I needed to do this to try to balance the water chemistry. The first time I used the pool pump with several vacuum hoses tied together. As soon as the water level got lower than the skimmer it stopped pumping out the water. With this new separate pump, I could lower the water level as low as I wanted and did not have to use the pool pump or vacuum hoses. I simply attached a garden hose to it, plugged it in, and that was it. It is also very quiet when in use. This is definitely the way to go to drain a pool. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Works great. Using it to drain Koi pond for water changes. Couldn't be happier with the way it works for me September 6, 2016
