Installation on existing windows?

Can this be installed on my existing windows? I have lapboard siding and trim boards around my windows, but contractor didn't put anything on upper trim to protect water from flowing down into the windows. Wanted to slide something like this product under the lapboard above window to form a "mini awning" over and make the water run to the sides. Would this work?
