The window has a 1/2" extruded flange #more like 5/8's# and it states it can be removed. Other than just cutting it off, how do you remove it?

Asked by: Jerry
NovaRoma is correct. Using a sharp box cutter it takes less than 1 or 2 minutes to score and snap off clean. I did my 2 windows this way.

Would there be any problems with the sliding part slipping (or any other problems) if the window were hung vertically?

Asked by: Eagle
BUY A SINGLE HUNG WINDOW. THE WEEP HOLES, AND THE SASH WILL NOT OPERATE PROPER ON A XO OR A OX WINDOW.

I bought two of the 31.75 x 18" ones for my basement, bought 1st one and installed, then bought the 2nd one and installed. The other more expensive one HD sells seemed to have less glass area and I wanted the maximum glass area, I think I got it. Removing the old metal framework and preparing the cement opening was very time consuming. The house was built in 1958 and the metal frame was heavier and embedded deeper than any shown on YouTube. I and a helper took over a hour each to remove the windows with a lot of concrete damage, especially on the bottom edge. I bought 10 lbs of HD's "Quick Setting Concrete", and used most of it to repair this damage. To install between the concrete surfaces the nailing fins had to be removed. The new window installation in the opening was relatively easy after the concrete was repaired. They look very good and the glass is insulated. The screen covers just the sliding glass area, not the whole window.

I ordered multiple windows at the same time and received 2 different styles of the same window. Most had a 1/16" flange and one had a nice heavy 1/8" flange with square corners. All the corners were cropped on the 1/16 flanges, not sure why( maybe to remove sharp edge). Was not happy about this but it is minor and if molding is used outside it will be covered. The sash seem really loose in them, they slide easy and the lock does not feel substantial, but there again it is an inexpensive basement window. If they seal they will be fine windows. It is too cold to install them now, time will tell.

The window I got is defective, the sliding part does not work, the pane falls out easily, it is missing the piece that makes it fit tightly and able to slide open or closed. We already had the hole in the wall before we found this out so returning it was not an option, it is winter time and it would take 2 weeks to get a new one and who says the next one won't be missing that same part? They did fill out the forms to the manufacturer to ask them to send me the part it is missing, again 2 weeks before it might get here. This is my first time I purchased anything from Home Depot and most likely my last. I do not recommend this window to anyone.

Recently replaced my old, steel basement casement windows with a new Tafco vinyl, doubled paned window. The Tafco window I had installed was readily installed with no problems and is a distinct improvement over the steel window. Has a sliding window and provides significantly better insulation than the old window. The vinyl frame doesn't conduct the cold into the basement like the steel frame did. Would recommend installing these Tafco windows in the basement. The Tafco window definitely meets my expectations. Home Depot was the only source where I was able to find the size I needed.

Windows are great...except for one lock came broken and the window wont open because of it...they sent me a new lock and hopefully that fixes the problem.... the nailing flanges are a little small and don't have holes for nails, but all in all (assuming the swap out of the lock fixes the issue) the value for the cost is pretty good.
